Sociology/Human Services Career Interests?
I'm really interested in Sociology and Human Services (Sociology is my 1st choice) fields, but I don't quite know exactly what career I want to go in to. Something with criminology, juvenile delinquency, etc. I don't want to be a counselor necessarily and definitely not a social worker (I don't want to take kids away from their parents). I wouldn't mind being a probation office (adult or juvenile) but those jobs are hard to get in my city. I'm not sure what kind of jobs are offered in the women's prison system (the women's is in my city, the male's prison is too far) or the juvenile detention center, but I wouldn't mind those places as long as I'm not a guard or anything. Does anyone have advice/career possibilities they can offer that are in those areas?

- I'm majoring in sociology right now and will be graduating this summer, so I've looked into some of the careers a little bit. Criminology is something that really interests me as well and I know that it's possible with a bachelor's in sociology, but from what I understand there's a low demand for criminologists and it's a hard field to get into. You could certainly do something with juvenile deliquency, I'm actually going to be taking a sociology of juvenile delinquency class next semester. I'm not sure exactly what kind of job you could do with that...but I'm sure there's something. I mostly know about being an advocate, I think I want to be a victim's or child's advocate when I graduate. Anyway, all of the jobs you listed are very possible with a bachelor's in sociology (except social work. You'd need a master's degree, although you said you're not even interested in that so it doesn't matter anyway).
- Keep your options open! I am a social worker, child protection for the state of Wyoming. We, and a few other states, do not have the power to take children away, but it is still a difficult job. My coworker is a juvenile probation officer. The preferred degree is a sociology degree for either of our jobs (Bachelors, the Masters is an added plus). Other jobs in our area you could get with a Bachelors are: school social worker, medical social worker, adult/juvenile probation and parole, group home counselors, child advocacy center workers, etc. I think the best thing you could do now is to do an internship with whatever interests you the most. The internships go a long way with employers, and you may find that what you think you want do to may not be the case. Good luck!!
