Lost and confused.?
I have a degree in accounting and I like the subject, but I can't cope with the long working hours and stress in this profession. I stayed in this field for 1 year and then I started temping for another year. I thought that I will find my direction but I end up more confused than ever. I can't find a job that keeps my interest for more than 6 months! I feel like I have wasted my degree and I am so lost with my life. Approaching 30 with no stable job makes me unsettled and uncertain about my future. My friends are all in managerial positions and I am still a junior executive. How long can I keep things going like that?! I think I have a problem but I don't know what and how to tackle it. I have done career counselling and assessment tests and I know I have to figure out what I want with my life. I have done it all and that does not help! I feel like giving up! Yes, call me a whiner if you must but that is not going to help. I really need some advice, please! :'-( Avoidance mode....how can I switch mode? And thanks, eric, for telling me you are not my mummy! :-P (haha, but i appreciate that you reply, thanks, really.)

- When I hired temps, I often found that those who seemed content to move from temp position to temp position were trying to avoid the stress of significant engagement in a given organization and job. Maybe that describes your situation. There is nothing wrong with this hopping from entry level opportunity to entry level opportunity, but it doesn't pay very well, and virtually guarantees that you won't find advancement. Let's face facts--any job during the first 6 months is just beginning to get serious. By getting out at this point, you're not giving yourself or the job a chance. If you are trying to avoid stress and engagement, this type of temping works, but you're seeing the negatives of this approach. If you'd had one or two jobs that didn't hold your interest, I'd say keep looking. But, if you've held several and nothing holds your interest, you need to look deeper. Either you're hopelessly miscast, or you're in avoidance mode.
- Having a degree in accounting doesn't necessarily tie to accounting jobs (I have a BS in Ag. Econ, and work at bank as a Relationship Manager - and not to farmers/ranchers.) You need to assess your dream. If money was NO object, what would you do? Where would you do it? scroll down>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> There you have you answer. Good luck
- We're not your mommie. It's YOUR life and you have to make the decisions. You say you "can't deal" with the long hours of accounting - how well do you think you'll "deal" with being homeless? I think you should either accept that there will be some things you don't like about your job and decide to put up with them for the money; OR Accept that your life isn't going to amount to much and be happy with the temp jobs.
- well..what brings a smile to your face and joy to your heart? is it a physical activity, such as swimming, scuba diving, hiking, being outdoors? knitting, working with people? find the things in your life in which you find joy, and there you will have your answer. personally, i can't stand being behind a desk, so i created my own manufacturing company in my early thirties and i take almost six months off each year, while the company chugs along. plus, i have a very good income. got twenty stamps on my passport last year alone. Find out what you like to do and make it your career.
- ever consider a job in the Forensic Accounting field? It would allow you to work on cases and to find laundered monies, fraud, money transactions with murder cases or disappearances? some Computer knowledge and some Science courses may help you out. Don't know where you live but, DeLoitte & Touche, employs people with your background and they get paid well. Just a thought.....Good Luck
- This is a problem that some of us face while in looking for job. I believe you have your own interest or passion. If your interest or passion can provide you with a career, then you can look at it as a choice. It doesn't mean that you are graduate with degree in accounting, you have to go into this field. Sometimes we will be happier if we are going jobs that interest us. Hope this could be a pointer for you.
