What should I do?
I'm really really confused and I could take a career assessment test but it's 200.00 where I live... I'm nineteen years old and I love animals but Vet Tech's only make 10.00 an hour. Whereas if I became a Dental Assistant I could possibly be looking at more than 10.00 and I'd have job stability probably. But my real passion is animals. What would be best to do? Go to school to be a Vet Tech or do the Dental thing?

- Follow your passion, but expand your view. Vet Tech is not the only job that deals with animals.
- Be a Vet Tech and take classes to become a vetenarian. You can achieve that goal by the time you're 26. You'll be happy you followed your passion. It will eventually lead to a decent living wage and be fulfilling at the same time.
- Actually, you could do both. Become a dental assistant to earn enough money to finance your way into veterinarian courses, and when you get your degree, you can then turn your specialty to dental care for animals. We just paid a vet $4K for extracting a broken tooth from our horse, and I know that a lot of small animal vets are dealing with peridontal disease and cleaning teeth. It's just a thought. Do what your heart says is best.
- Do what you love or you will not be happy, and face it, you spend a majority of your life at work. Secondly, you can type "career assessment" into Google and find some for free. You can also go to a college to get a free career assessment. You say that job security is a concern, what makes you think a vet tech has less job security than a dental assistant? If you really love animals, think about the long-term and the possibility of taking night classes, etc to obtain a vet degree and be the one in charge? Look for scholarships, ask about educational reimbursement from the vets you apply to, consider student loans, lots of options.
