ASVAB Test?
In the near future I plan on enlisting in the U.S. Coast Guard as a Port Security Specialist (PS). This job is only available to reservists. My question is - If I take the ASVAB test and I happen to do bad on it - does that mean I'm screwed and I have to take whatever job they want me to? Am I already committed to a service in the Coast Guard by the time I take the ASVAB test? - I ask this because the only reason I want to join the Coast Guard is because it will be good experience for my future career in Law Enforcement - and if I do not get to enlist as a Port Security Specialist, my reason for being there is non-existent. Thanks and God bless, -Sonny

- Taking the ASVAB is part of qualifying for enlistment. So, you're not committed until you qualify and then sign the contract and take the oath.
- you would have to do pretty bad on the asvab to not qualify for "post security specialist". I would think, that if you can't do good enough to get this job, you have no business being a cop. Sorry to sound shrewd.
- Go to Military.com. They used to have an online practice test that will give you an idea of what to expect. Also, check out your local book seller. Arco makes many different study guides and I think that had one for the ASVAB. Don't get so hung up on the test. Even if you ace the test, they are going to put you where they need you. If possible get anything the recruiter says in writing. Remember they are there to get you through the door and into a uniform, and will many times tell what you want to hear in order to join. Also, be aware that Coast Guard units do sometimes get sent overseas.
- You can take the ASVAB 2 times then you have to wait 6 months. Try taking some these practice ASVAB (short or full-length) so your 1st(or 2nd) score will be high enough. Good Luck and God Bless you also!!!
- Like C hall said, you can take it twice but not more than once within 6 months. You can ask your recruiter to give you a practice test and he can tell you if you qualified for your mos or not. There are also many practice guides you can buy on line or at any major bookstore. Regardless of what anyone says, you have absolutely no commitment until you you raise your hand and take the oath on the day that you actually ship. You'll sign a contract and take an oath if you enter the delayed entry program, but you'd still have no commitment
- For Port Security Specialist, they want experience in that field, you have to serve in any of the armed forces to apply for that position, you must have prior experience. The ASVAB is just for getting into the military, you can become a coxwains mate or gunners mate.
- i just to the practice test 3 hours ago. and it was the eisiest test i ever took. the requierd score is a 31 for coast gaurd and i got a 97, which is less then 50% right you will do fine on the test
- Don't stress too much over the asvab. Basic Algebra, comprehension skills, and numerical expressions..Simple! I would suggest studying the mechanical parts ,and objects. They also have a section where your required to match figures and assemble them. You should be able to match those just fine with a sharp eye. Just take your time ,and never look at the clock!! You'll pass..If not the Coast Gaurd is not active duty. So it does not require as high of a score. Try to score atleast a 28 on your asvab though. Pretty impossible not to. I scored a 82 on the actual test.
