From start to finish, what is the best way to get a website up and running? How can I ensure it will be seen?

I am wanting to get a website up and running. I am not sure where to begin. I can easily buy a domain name, but from there, I'm not sure what to do. I have very good computer skills, but no development experience. It is also important that this site be easily findable, and not buried 50 pages back when it comes to searches. I am wanting to use this site for the purposes of drawing together, like minded individuals who are focused, or care to focus on classroom education. In addition, I hope to reach anyone who may be interested in learning more about what I plan to do career-wise in Education, and are interested in helping me towards my goals. Quite honestly, I am seeking help. I struggle with meeting daily expenses with two young adult children, and a home. I simply have to create more, and I believe the internet may be the vehicle that is needed. I am also looking to create an online business within this site. I appreciate any help you can give. Thank you!

  1. if you can pay get a professional site promoter if not do this ★★ PROMOTE YOUR WEB SITE ★★ ◙ You need to submit your site to many search engines. Search engines will not accept your site if it is listed on free-for-all list sites. They will not accept it if it is a newbie site that is about them only. Think of a subject and write about it. It can take 2 weeks to 6 months or more before they list you. Even if they do accept your site you'll need to check your listing occasionally to make certain it is still listed. If a site gets no traffic or isn't updated regularly they will delte your listing. If you are a serious webmaster you will need to read about site optimisation at http://www.searchengines.com/ Another great site is http://www.searchenginewatch.com/ Search engine submission tips (lots of info) http://www.searchenginewatch.com/webmasters/ ◙ You'll find about 400 search engines here. ☞ http://dwight.clickthesky.com/search/ ◙ There are web sites that claim to submit your site to hundreds of search engines at once. The only one I recommend is http://www.dmoz.org/ The other search engines use this directory to supplement their own directories. Youdd it to google here http://www.google.com/addurl/ ◙ If you have a Geocities home page list it in Geocities Homepage Directory http://pages.yahoo.com/ You'll find help for that here http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/geo/gmembers/ ◙ Read about Google's unique page ranking system. ☞ http://www.googleguide.com/pagerank.html ◙ Improving search engine positioning (ranking) with other search engines. ☞ http://www.google.com/search?q=improving+search+engine+rank+position
  2. Look at CMS applications like Joomla, Drupal (both Open Source - i.e. free).
  3. 1&1 Hosting (www.1and1.com) has very good and inexpensive packages. There is also an online merchant turnkey service (easy to get up and running), if you plan on selling items. They also have online page creators so that you do not have to do much work as far as design goes to create a good looking site. For search engine submission, most of their packages include submission to major search engines, but you can also do a quick search for "search engine optimization" to find out more. Also, it is important to have as many pages link to your page as possible, because that's how a page gets crawled by Google.
