Career Advice As Far As Real Estate Developer/Real Estate Attorney/City Planner?

I am really confused about what I should major in at college. I love cities, real estate and people and want to major in either finance (real estate emphasis), urban planning, urban studies or sociology. I would like to be a real estate developer, real estate attorney, city planner or, just a highly successful individual in real estate. I believe that the finance major is a must because I will be dealing with large amounts of money no matter what. However, what other major should a choose to get a good background about people and cities. If I work for a city I would like to focus on housing, zoning and development. Moreover, if I get my J.D. I would also like to have knowledge in areas other than urbanization and money. I can not get an undergrad in four majors because that is way to much time and money. I really need advice. Currently, my career goal is leaning more towards Real Estate Attorney/City Planner. What should I do? Your Advice would be greatly appricated. High School Senior

  1. Depends on what state your are in or intend to live in after you finish college. If you are willing to move (and need to), I recommend Real Estate Attorney. The reason I mentioned moving is that you want to be in a state that is considered an "Attorney State". NY, NJ and IL are a few I know of off the top of my head that are atty states. Real Estate agents are not at all supportive of the use of attorneys in transactions in non-atty states and unfortunately have a lot of influence over their clients where this is concerned. Regarding zoning and development, there are a small number of jobs in this field so the positions are scarce. One other thing to consider as a RE Atty, you may want to focus heavily on corporate relocation - no matter how bad the market, the corporate moves are always happening.
