I want to do something about poverty, housing, and urban blight? What career should I choose?

I was thinking about urban planning and community development, but I tried to get internships in this field and they seemed to be unwilling to give an unexperienced person a chance. What other careers can I pursue that will allow me to tackle the issues?

  1. Get involved with your local recreation center. Thats a great place to start.
  2. Try community service in your area and you will be able to network from there. Also you might check organizations such as Lions, Moose, Elks, etc. because many of their members are directly and indirectly involved in helping those types of conditions. I wish you success because our country can use all the help it can get in these areas.
  3. HUMAN RESOURCES! This field allows you to work with the homeless, Dept. for Families and Children and even in the Human Resource Dept. at Factories such as interviewing clients. This is a broad range in the employment field. You may even teach with a masters degree. You can volunteer your time at a homeless shelter or as a mentor some place. This wil help with experience on your Application/Resume.
  4. magician!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  5. Get a civil engineering degree and minor in sociology. You'll not only be able to build help centers, you'll also be able to run them and provide counseling.
