- In order to succeed in any career path you need to define the critical factors of that career. In any profession, there are 6-7 critical factors you have to become extremely good at to succeed. That holds true whether you are a plumber or a surgeon. Even being a spouse has 6-7 critical factors you must be etremely good at to make the marriage work. As a part of your personal development you have to make it your business to define those 6-7 things and make it your business to become extremely good at all of them. Educate yourself, read, ask experts. Your success in that career will be limited by the critical factor that you are the weakest in. Hope this helps Onion
- No matter what aspect of your life you want to improve, you need to have a focus on your own growth. It's like when people say "god will provide for me", yeah maybe god will but god will not give you everything all organised on a platter. The only thing god will do is provide the resources and opportunities, it's up to you to recognise, organise and use them. If everything where provided to you in a complete way then it would violate the human need for growth. The point is that in any venture, be it career, relationships, fun and leisure, spirituality, emotional states etc, you need to be focused on developing yourself on some level consistently. If we don't follow some kind of plan for personal development and contribute to ourselves on a daily basis then how can we ever hope to contribute beyond ourselves in anything we do? Personal development is often overlooked by so many people who say, "I am content and don't need to change anything", it's not about changing who you are for the sake of changing it, it's about growing. As human beings we need to grow just as a business does, so our growth needs to be reflected in our career. My advice would be to commit to the Japanese principle of Kaizen. This means to continuously improve in some way every day even if the improvement is so small it's barely noticeable because over time this snowballs into major growth in the medium to long term. My name is Chris Lyons, I am an exercise physiologist and human behaviour expert. I run personal development seminars and one on one programs. - As an educator personal development planning comes in the form of a personal mission statement. Corporations have mission statements but having a personal mission statement that needs to be updated every year allows you to "see" where you have been where you want to go and how you are planning to get there. As a classroom teacher this has allowed me to see that I needed to become more proficient in the design of curriculum for our students which led to my obtaining a master's degree in curriculum planning and leads me to my future goal of becoming a district wide planner of curriculum for our school district. Start with a personal mission plan reflect on it every year, and update it every year and it will lead you to your true path.
