I have a Business degree but not sure what options I have other than Accounting. I would like to know what careers as an Accountant to Buyer is like. Any advice on how to make a career change? I am a social worker with a Master's degree and five years managerial experience in a health care setting. Career advice - career change before even starting one? I'm a senior finance student but I want to go into IT. As a freshmen, I was accepted into our info.studies school but switched into business to build communication/teamwork skills that were not present. I should've done a dual, but i decided to use my electives in areas that helped me develop as a whole. Now as a senior, I realize that IT is for me. With 3 years of internships in different business areas, none in technology, its impossible to get the job I want. I've picked up an IT minor and am working on certs, but with no IT courses completed as of yet, interviews turn negative quickly. My gpa has increased each semester, but since I focused on my weaknesses its still low. I'm interning in financial services now and I dread every day. Plus, since I dont want to go into finance, i see it as hours that could been used on learning .net, java, etc...Should I quit and focus on tech studies, or stay and aim for a finance job while improving my tech skills? I NEED a job in May!
Life/Career change- need advice, please. Should I venture into a small business or go back to school for PT? I am 43 yrs. old. I have a BA in Linguistics and a Masters in Special Education. I have worked in the school system for 10 yrs. in the field of Special Ed. and am completely burnt out...too much paperwork and politics. I need to earn a living, but can not see myself teaching long term. I had thought of doing some type of small business (health products, maybe) but don't know where to start. Also have considered returning to college to get a degree in physical therapy or the like. But, I do not really want to spend the time and money getting another degree. I am a natural writer ...but not sure if that can sustain me in the present. Any suggestions or helpful advice....thanks in advance for your comments!
Career change - need some advice? I am a Phd in Literature, and I have just turned 25. I would like to make a career change and become a web designer. I have already learned the main software needed. Change of career advice please? I have fallen into most of the jobs I do, and have trouble identifying my skills or thinking about how I could use my experience to have a career.I'm 40and would like to focus more.I'm unsure about how to go about it. I need to earn more money, and underpin my experience with qualifications.I am interested in a change of direction.I've been a major part of an team of three, organising festivals and concerts, so I have good skills in this direction. I have computer skills, have my ECDL, some web design, admin skills and an interest in IT. I've a real interest in communications, voice work and speech, and have some experience there, but no qualifications.I've started up and run a national charity then passed it on to other people. I do get bored of what I do, and I know I lack focus. It's not that I'm not proud of what I've done, ie the concerts etc, but I'd like to have some job security, some money, and possibly a change in direction.Anyone help?
Career change advice? Please Read? Ok so here is the deal. Two years ago I took the Police Foundations course and successfully recieved my diploma, however after now being unsuccessful in the testing process to become a police officer three times and taking three years out of my life due to wait times with retesting; I am thinking a career change and suprisingly have thought about becoming a registered massage therapist. My Mother and Father don't support the idea to say the least (not that I care because I am 25, but encouragement is always nice.) but I hear it makes great money and it is something I have always thought of doing in the back of my mind. So the question is, should I continue trying to become a police officer? Or should I go back to school to become an Rmt?
CAREER ADVICE: Is this a good time to change careers? I know the economy is bad, and I do have family concerns (small children) but I'm at a crossroads. I'm in a stable field (Education) happy where I am, but there are several positions available at an institute of higher learning I'd love to apply for. I've longed to top out at a college. But...starting over scares me, and the fact we need stability at home. But these opportunities may not be available for years again. Has anyone else changed jobs in the middle of a struggling economy AND if so, how did you deal with family matters?

Not opposed to a career change. Any suggestions? I'm 34.

career change advice? tech to finance? I currently hold a field technician position with a small tech company. My ultimate goal is to start a banking outfit or asset management firm. Unfortunately, I don't have the time or money to go back to school. Where should I start? Please don't say go back to school, I know that would be the most sensible direction but I really can't. I know somebody who started as a bank teller and is now making 300 grand a year in the financial services industry, but is this route applicable to my situation?
Thinking of a career change, business to ?; Any advice for making a change? Where to look for information? Hello. Earlier this year I graduated from college with an undergraduate degree in Business management. I have had only a couple of offers for employment, but nothing that would satisfy me. I figured a salary around 30k to begin with along with benefits would not be asking for much. I been becoming frustrated lately trying to find something and now Im thinknig of going back to school and looking outside of business for a major. Im just curious if anyone felt the same way and what you did, or what are you doing now, to go about a career change? Have you looked at anything online that has assisted you and helped you make a clearer choice? Anything you can help me with would be greatly appreciative. Basically Im confused and just looking for suggestions. Thank you to all who reply!

Anyway, I am pretty intelligent and only left school because I suffered extremely bad Galangela Fever. Anyway, I entered into this fulltime admin/personal assistant job. I don’t really like anything about my job. I don’t like the work I do and I don’t like the people I work with. I feel that at 16 I still have time to explore where I want to go in life. That is why I would absolutely LOVE a career change. My mind needs stimulating. I don’t get that at my current job. I get bored really easy and I have always been the type to do absolutely anything just so my brain is being fed! I’m thinking of going to TAFE or doing some sort of study which doesn’t require year 12 completion. I’ve always wanted to get into nursing or something to do with health services. Does anybody have any good suggestions on interesting careers? Or a good place to study on the Gold Coast, Australia? I don’t want a traineeship. I just want to study and get it out of the way. Please help. I feel really lost at the moment.

Looking for a career change from theatre to hospitality/PR. Any advice out there? Have been in the theatre world for past 10 years - lots of transferrable skills since I have experience of touring and handling my own self-employed accounts and of co-producing shows, so project management background is in place. Moving to Japan--advice on career change? We have lived in Japan twice 10 years ago both doing the JET program in turn. We now have 2 young children (Asian, adopted) and would love for them to have the opportunity to live abroad, go to an international school and live & travel in Asia. My husband has worked in product management/development for the past 10 years in Japanese companies and is in a career track to become a director at his current company. We loved living in Japan, as hard as it is, and have always dreamed of trying the ex-pat life there. The current position is a switch from Japanese manufacturing companies to working as a director for a US state office in Japan to bring Japanese companies to that state (& jobs for US workers). Idealistically we really like it and hope that long term, it will help my husband break into working for American companies in Japan. We wonder, though, if this kind of change in his resume (we plan to live there at least 3-5 years) would really set him back. Thanks!
Honest answers please... need advice on family and career change? Okay, I'll try this category since everyone else answers were nonsense. Here is the situtation: I am a single parent who will be moving to a smaller community (22,000 people versus 1.3 million) and have a few dilemmas. Career Dilemma: First, I already have an Associates Degree in general studies. I want to change careers as well as just relocating. Most job advertisements require only a high school diploma (only 20% of the town has an AS or BA). I am looking into short term education opportunities where I am living now. Would it be better to get additional program certificates in one specific area (such as accounting) or get course certificates in a variety of areas? I just want to be able to get a job there. Family Dilemma: How do I explain the move to my son? He will be four when we move and really hates change.
Have you made a career change? Need advice, Please? What profession would accept a newbe that is an older woman. The age discrimation is alive and well, and I understand why - I just have to deal with it. That said, I must work for a long time yet. My talents include computer, office, 65 wpm, etc. Customer service, receptionist. I am not sales material. Would getting a degree or certificate help? In what? I am currently working thru a temp agency for a company that will not hire anyone, and a $9.50 per hour staying on is not a viable option.

Contemplating Career Change: Words of advice from those in similar situations please.? I am currently a graphic designer w/ a BFA under my belt and have been working in the industry for about 4 years. Am already getting bored with it especially working with unappreciative people. Am considering pursuing a degree as a surgical tech, as have always been passionate about medicine. Plus, the money would be better and I would feel more stable in financial side as my field now doesn't pay great. Has anyone jumped careers and felt satisfied with the outcome? I'm 25 so not sure if this feeling is common among those my age. Thanks for all your help!
Career Change from Law Enforcement to Paralegal. Any advice? I have a background and degree in Law Enforcement and worked as a police officer, in corrections, and currently security. Advice for a Career Change? I have three years of experience in Social Work and an M.A. in Psychology. I have decided to change my career so as to not do Social Work or anything counseling related. However, because I am living in New York City, I need to make atleast $35,000 a year to afford the bills. Any job suggestions?
Need advice on career change.? I have absolutely no interest in the current field that I'm in. I work in the back office of a large brokerage firm and I make a pretty decent salary. I came into this field basically to make someone other than myself happy. I have become increasingly unhappy and unfulfilled. I have no interest in taking courses to move up in the company, and I have no interest to learn new things. I just come to work, watch the clock, and go home. The hours are great but it’s a long commute in from where I live. Aside from gas I also have to pay for parking (there's no transit). I also have to work most statutory holidays. The work environment is abusive and there’s a lot of bullying going on. My heart hasn’t been into getting a job in the same field. By accident I applied and got an offer for a health care position that I'm excited about. There’s a lot of future potential for me. The problem is the $20K pay cut ($10k with gas and parking). We just bought a house and will be starting a family. Advice
Career change advice? 6 years ago I fell into Risk and Compliance working for an asset management firm in the city. I worked my way up the ladder and before I knew it I was managing a team of people earning a good salary. Thing is, I'm losing that drive and enthusiasm I once had. I think it may be time for a change into something else with in the city but what to I'm not sure. I have fairly decent product knowledge and contemplate working for an investment bank rather than asset management as I'm drawn to the idea of working within a more pressured environment. I'm very driven by money which is not something I like to admit but the truth is I really believe I have the potential to make much more than I currently do. At 27 years old, I'd rather act sooner rather than later. please help
Career change advice? I have been working for many years in the defense sector doing information security research work. Recently my priorities have changed and I'd like something a little less stressful, that I can feel better about. I was thinking of smaller, non-profit / socially beneficial organizations... but I don't think these organizations use recruiting methods I'm familiar with. Any ideas about how to find such a position? Ideally in the Pacific Northwest?
any advice for a career change? i have been managing a restaurant and want to move to an office related job. but it seems to be a hard transition. either i dont have the office experience required, experience in a different industry (looking mainly at oil and gas companies), they think i want a managment job right away. since i am a guy it is even been hard to be considered for anything other than field or shop work. any advice or tips to help get my foot in the door?
Former Police Officer Needs, A Little Community Advice About A Career Change or Return? In 2004 at the age of 22 I was hired as a recruit for the Prince George’s County Police Department in the state of Maryland. After graduating from their 29 week academy, I only did five actual months police field work. My Sgt. gave me a sit down talk, and told me I was a good kid, but I just was not ready yet, after two incidents on calls when I froze up during my FTO period. So I resign. I went back to school, and now I’m studying to work in the electrician field. I graduate February of 2009. Prior to joining the academy I did go to college and my major was criminal justice, I found out there really isn’t too much to do with that major. Anyways I’m about to turn 26, and the taste of being a police officer, has came back into mouth. I now know I just was not ready yet, and want to give it a shot again. The funny thing about being a police officer was that I loved it, and hated too. I will graduate from school next year, because I want that major under my belt. But I’ve been thinking of a possible return in 2009, or 2010 when I’m 27or 28. I’m definitely not going back to PGPD, but most likely Howard, or Anne Arundel County. What are your thoughts should I attempt an return? Or stay in the electrician field? (they do make pretty good money)

Career Change? Should I change Careers? Currently I teach art in an elementry and middle school. I thought I would love teaching, but after two years, I don't. I hate dealing with behavior problems, the pay is pitifual and I would like to at least move out of my parents house, and I hate having to be a "preformer" and "on stage" everyday. Lastly, I really want to make art, but by the tine I'm trrough planing, preping, and cleaning at school I'm to exhusted to have a life or make art. Sometimes I feel like my classroom in a prison cell. The thing is, i'm a thesis away from a Master's in education. I don't have many other skills to find a job with, but toying around with the idea of going back to school and getting trained (not another degree, i alread have enough of those)as a web/print graphic designer. I don't know if I want to take on more debt, but I also know I don't want to teach k-12 forever. What advice would you give?

Well last year I did childcare at college and I decided to stay on again to do the next level so thats what i'm doing at the minute but I am getting really bored and I dont want to do it anymore i'm more interested in Media and Science. "Mid life crisis" career change? I'm 40 years old and have been doing the same job (albeit with different companies) since I was 17. I am in a declining industry (worsted wool textile manufacturing) and have a specialised job with no apparent transferable skill (woven suiting fabric design). Although it is fairly well paid and has allowed me to travel to different countries I am bored rigid with it and can not see the industry lasting more than another 10 years (I have been made redundant several times in the last 23 years). There are other opportunities in sales and buying but I want out of textiles altogether. Now the real problem - I have abslolutely no idea what I want to do! I have tried looking for careers advice in my area, but there are only DSS run services which are not set up to offer proper advice to people in my position. Can anyone offer any sensible advice on how I could start changing career paths?
Seeking Career change advice....? I have a BA degree in Political Science, and am currently working full time (as a recruiter) and doing my MBA part time. I have so far completed classes in financial accounting, managerial accounting, financial management, managerial economics, quantitative finance, and advanced financial management. I know that I want to change careers and work as a financial analyst. Is there any way for me to enter the field with what I have so far? Thank you all in advance! Yes, I do have the certificates/transcripts.
Career Change? I have worked in the music industry 15 yrs. I left to start my own business last year. This has not worked out and I need to get back to the workplace. I am 45 years old and going back to the music industry is probably not an option. Anyone with similiar experience? if so how did you get out of this situation. Any advice greatly appreciated.
I am making a career change... I would like to be a hairstylist, any advice? I went to the Unversity of Michigan, then became a sales rep... had the job I SHOULD have wanted, but got no enjoyment out of it even though I was very good at sales. During this time i've had off, i've decided that I would really enjoy being a hair stylist and I think specifically a hair colorist. What advice does anyone have on picking a school (preferably in michigan), starting over at 26, what options I should look into (spa, salon, renting a chair, etc) and also marketing myself once I get thru school (or does anyone offer cheap hair cuts, etc, while they're in school??). Thanks! :)
Career Change? I have a dear friend who thinks that I would make an awesome car salesperson. Of course, he's telling me all the great things about this job... Does anyone with experience in automotive sales have anything to offer me, in the way of advice?
Career Change? I love to do financial and marketing analysis, however, i've been having a rough time getting entry level positions because i am not a recent graduate. I received my MBA back in 2001 when the dot com bubble got bursted, so all companies freezed hiring. Now that the market is better, I still have a tough time getting job interviews 'cuz they said I am too old and experienced (in other fields) to have an entry level financial analyst position, even though my GPA was 3.8 and I really love finance. Any advice?
Career Change? I currently hold a degree in Constuction Management and have almost 5 years of experience in this profession. However, I am not very satisfied and want to move on. I was thinking of getting a PMP certification which would enable me to manage projects in other industries as well. Getting a PMP looks like the fastest way to move on to a different industry - I am looking for a family friendly industry where I dont have to move from job to job. Any advice is highly appreciated.
Middle-aged in need of career advice...? Hi - I'm 45 and in a career field that has fewer opportunities every year. A lot of talented people I know in my field are unemployed so I'm lucky that I still have a job, but I've been downsized twice and would like to make a career change before the next axe falls. My problem is I'm having a tough time navigating what appears to be the new reality in the workplace. I'd go back to school if I had a sense that in a couple years I'd come out with a degree that would give me twenty solid years of employment, but I don't know what that field would be. I've thought about business but my funds aren't endless and I feel I have one chance to get it right. Any advice or insight would be much appreciated. Thanks. I'm in corporate video.
