What help is there to retrain as an adult in the UK? My other half is a barman on minimum wage and we're really struggling - we have a 7 month old baby so its not possible for us both to work full time. He has GCSEs but no vocational quals and hes found it really hard to get a decent job. He would like to retrain, perthaps as a driving instructor but the only funding available for this is a Career Development Loan and he has a really bad credit rating so I doubt he'd get one of these as they are loaned from the High Street Bamks who base it on a credit check. Has anyone else been in a similar position? The Careers Service were no help at all. There must be some help out there for people who want to better themselves but don't have the money or credit facility to pay their training fees?
What can I do? Education or Social Services? Career Counselor was worthless.? I have 2 AA Degrees, a Bachelor's Degree in Management, 61 units completed for the Education Specialist Credential in M-M Disabilities and additional coursework in ASL, Child Development and Computers/Office Technology. I did not pass my student teaching due to my disability. My work experience includes (Aide, Substitute Teacher, ESL Testing Technician, Non-profit agencies for clients w/disabilities, food service and retail). I could get my Masters in ED w/o the credential by taking 4 more classes ( + my thesis). Or, I could take the same amount of classes for the ECE Credential, (no thesis required) But, what if I don't pass my student teaching again? Most of my education and experience is in education. If I apply in a field that is different, employers say I need a different degree or ask, why the change? I need to know what am I qualified to do with what I have so far. If I need to go a little further, Masters Degree or an ECE credential? Please help if you can. I have passed the CBEST, SSAT and RICA Examinations for teaching. I do not have the energy to start a different Masters Degree from the bottom-up.

Does anyone know of volunteer fire departments in the Seattle area? Or fire departments that'll take part-time members, for that matter. I'm a volunteer firefighter in the Houston area and I've really enjoyed my time in the fire service. However, my career development may mean that I have to relocate to Seattle in the near future and I would hate to give up my time in the fire service.
Who is teaching the next generation how to get a job? Should they be fired? I manage a staff of over 150 employees and take responsibility for recruiting, reviewing applications and conducting interview. Honestly I am getting fed up! Applicants between the age of 18 and about 27 who come prepared for an interview are few and far between. The average applicant comes in with an incomplete application, poor communication skills, no pen, dressed inappropriately, not willing to put in the grunt work and feel entitled to walk in as the king of the castle. Just today I conducted 5 interviews and only one applicant had a pen with him. Many are unable to maintain eye contact or answer a simple question without 10 seconds of ummms and ughhs. Did the career development services in high schools get shut down? Does anyone teach these kids how to fill out an application? How to dress? How to hold an intelligent and professional conversation? Do today’s high school teachers even teach the meaning of professionalism? Does anyone have an idea of what has happened to the future of American workers?
Human Development and Family Studies, Community Services Option? thats the degree i'll be getting. my gpa is 3.63. what am i going to do with this degree? what career should i pursue? i live in the rust belt, and the socio-economic situation here is not good. i would like to improve my home area. i honestly care about people, and society. options on employment with this degree?
How can I explain leaving my field and working in sales then going back to my field of human services ? I spent almost a year in sales and found that I'd rather make a difference in the lives of others than depend on others to pay my bills. I wasn't really good at it but I was determined at least to try because there were more opportunities to make money ( human service is very low paying) . I really needed more money and still do. However, Im not sure if a hr manager will see it that way. My cover letters do show a relationship between my year in sales and continued professional development as in transferable skills. But I am worried that my temporary career change might make me seem unstable. Any ideas?
what kinds of jobs can a person have with a BS in human development? i have 7 yrs of sales and 5 yrs of sales management under my belt, but a business degree seems so boring! i think i want to change majors. just wondering what all my career options might be. i love sales and marketing, but i also have always loved the idea of working in the human services industry. i just don't want to take too much of a pay cut.
Why are so many of our future skilled tradesmen and women expected to spend three years at University? Should the UK Government now revert back to an education system that strongly encourages apprenticeships in engineering, design and the utility services eg plumbing, rather than encouraging everyone to study for a degree at Uni.? Many graduates are now discovering that an academic qualification is no longer a key to a successful career. Instead, trade qualifications can provide life long career development, and often big earnings as well as positions on the Board of Directors. Perhaps it might be the start of a new Industrial Revolution here, with far less service industry, and much more engineering development and production. What do you think in the UK? Does this situation exist in the USA? Apologies for the big question!!
Project management or business development? I hold a Ph.D. in Cancer Medicine and worked for 3 years as a R&D scientist screening novel anti-cancer drugs. I pursued my MBA and finished my degree less than one year ago. Since completing my MBA, I took up a position at a large pharmaceutical service provider identifying risks in study protocols (for clients) through global investigator surveys and help pepare material for proposals and bid defense meeting (for internal use). I like my position but would like to use my MBA skills more and am planning to look for other positions in 6-9 months time. Given my background, I am thinking I would be suitable as a clinical project manager or in business development. I believe business development jobs will lead to more oppurtunities later on. Is that correct? Also, what is the career path of a project manager in the pharma sector? I would be interested in your views! Thank you!
Do I stand a chance of finding a job in the UK in this career? I have a degree in Family and Human Development and currently work as a poverty advocate. I essentially help low income individuals and families locate housing and other needed services. I would really like to relocate to the UK but do not know if that is really possible. Is there a need for people in the social services field? BTW I currently reside in the US and earn 28,000 a year (which is only about 14,000 pounds)
Ok, which degree will serve me better in this economy? MA East Asian Studies, Columbia University MA Modern European Studies, Columbia University Each degree will be centered around their respective political economies and my thesis will be in either Emerging Asian Markets or the Political Economy of Europe. I would also take courses at Columbia Business School and the School of International Public Affairs. My first degree was in Economics from Harvard University. Will either of these degrees help out my chances for a career in business, development, or foreign service, coupled with my first bachelors? Thank You.
what would be the correct approach to this situation? Iam applying for a position with an Employment service organization which I think would be a great job for me. I am an ESL Teacher who works with Adults looking to upgrade their skills and find employment, now I want to be an Employment Consultant as it pays better. They are looking for someone with Adult Education training and /or 5 years directly related exp. They want a through knowlwdege of all fcets of job search and career development including an understanding of labour market trends and resources, ability to conduct outreach and marketing of clients and services etc. I do all that but from a Teacher perspective and not an Employment Consultant perspective. How can I market myself to get this new job????

I like what I do. I have always been interested in Real Estate. I have a Business/Finance undergrad. What I am wondering about is the career path to becoming a Project Manager. Any ideas on salaries from people who are project managers? What can becoming a project manager lead you to for further positions in terms of promotions. How about becoming a Project Manager for IT and other things. Sorry if I cannot frame my question coherently, but that just goes to show how little i know and how I want to get organized. Basically: -Project manager career path starting from entry-level position, especially in Real Estate Development -Starting salaries and salaries up the ladder -Career advancement opportunities Once again, thanks all!

I checked some site thats talking about them and see some good comments about the service, but we are still not sure if he should spend some money to start something like this. Ok, let me get your opinion: Which Career Objective Statement sounds better...? 1.) "Utilize my strong customer service background and enthusiastic demeanor to transition into an entry-level position as a legal support professional." 2.) "Utilize my polished, enthusiastic demeanor and strong customer service background to transition into an entry-level position as a legal support professional with an emphasis on professional growth and development." 3.) "Build an entry-level career in a Legal Support Role with an emphasis on professional growth, development and long-term mobility." 4.) "Build upon my friendly professionalism and tactful, client-focused communication skills to enable a successful transition into an entry-level career as a Legal Support Professional." Any other suggestions? I am: enthusiastic, professional, a "people-person", tactful, hardworking and ethical. And, I do have a Bachelors degree in Liberal Arts, but I DO NOT have any experience in law.

Should I choose passion or career? I'm in a major right now that I hate!!! I feel like my dreams are poisoned..but...this major will help me get a job even if it's in the section I wanted but not the field. The other major I want..is well very mind expanding...but very un marketable...but I would love doing it. So which should I choose? also I CANNOT change my minor or make one of these my minor... option 1) economics...to help in global development you must understand how the world works..ie:money...this is smart and does make one realistic about the world's greed...but so boring that I hate every class I sit in I feel dead! but for many foreign service agencies this is a plus. Option 2) Cultural anthropology...I could study different cultures, talk about issues of rascism and gender...just study the human animal...I would LOVE to take this...but unmarketable..I might be able to work in the non profit sector..but I would be happier..poor but happy! Plez help, I have to change courses soon!

Choosing careers? After doing numerous personality and career assessments over the internet, I have decided to choose a career as either a Tax Adviser or a Company Secretary (not a PA or a boss's secretary who does the typing and other general admin). I know that I will need to sit for professional exams in either case, so can someone advice me which career I should go for - Tax Adviser or the Company Secretary, in terms of salary, my age, the time it takes to obtain the job, any necessary professional qualifications to obtain, and career development. By the way, I am 40 years old and graduated with a non-honours degree about 15 years ago. I have about 10 years experience of administration/customer service and 6 years experience of debt collection. Thanks

Career change advice >> Freelance copywriting service? Total disatisfaction with my current employment has led me to thinking about the viability of working for myself. Has anyone got an experiences to share, any pearls of wisdom etc on trying to make it as a freelance copywriter? My professional experience so far has seen me collecet marketing qualifications and experience, as well as design and development of websites and various digital media (creative techie). I've written technical quides for experienced users, beginners learning materials, marketing materials. I havel also successfully optimised websites for search engines etc. I think I should be able to turn my hand to a wide variety of assignments. Any info / suggestions welcome. Please be honest. Willing to start building a portfolio with non-paying assignments should anyone know of any. Thanks :)
How and when do you start thinking about leaving your job...? ...when your career "hits the wall?" I am currently a permanent teleworker at my job at a NPO, working from home five days a week. My company provided the equipment, they pay for all the internet service (for now), and I make the most money I ever have since I began working in high school. And that's without having a college degree! Now here's the problem: I've been trying to take a step up, move into a position that offers a higher salary and more responsibility. But I've discovered that all the areas that I can get training in are already covered by co-workers, who might feel threatened if I started asking to work in their particular areas. Since our company encourages training and development, I've even consulted HR specialists at work, who've told me that my abilities exceed my job position, and that there's really nothing available to someone in my position w/o having a degree. So...do I go after a degree, or start shopping around for another job? Would a headhunter help me? Just some extra details to elaborate: I am 46 years-old, and although that I've been told that age should not be a factor in your decision to continue your education, I know that it will still affect my ability to get a job in a market where younger people are preferred, even with a four-year business degree. That seems like a poor excuse for not going for it, but I also have a $14K student loan I'm still trying to repay from a previous stint at a business school, and the average debt these days after earning a four-year degree can run as high as $50K. What I'm looking for here is some reasonable alternatives to accumulating a lot more debt.
Please help me find a direction to take my college education and career in....? I never wanted a career and therefore didn't go to college when you normally would, but now that I have a child of my own I want to earn more money to support him better. I have two years left in school and will be 35 when I finish. I now need to decide what to do with the next two years. I am more interested in the humanities than anything else but don't want to learn another language (already know 3). The thing is, I don't know what type of career would be best for me. Any ideas? Interests: History, arts, teaching kids how to play pee wee sports, helping train service dogs, movies, writing, horticulture, community gardening, and a bunch more Possible majors: Family and Human Development, Consumer and Community Studies, Economics, Anthropology, Philosophy, Speech Communications, History Dream job: Helping research and develop ideas for community improvement in a smaller community (under 50,000). Lead a girl scout troop or 4H group. Must haves: a house and a car (missing now)

how can i get into the social or human services field? i have a degree in economics, but now after being out of college for 2 yrs i have found that i have a passion for careers in a different field. i enjoyed studying econ when learning about development, poverty, jobs, inequalities, etc.. but i never did like the business end of it. and i do not like working in business. i know now that after being in the business world, i really want to work in a human services field. i want to do something that helps people and improves lives rather than just maximizing a profit. how can i get into this field? should i just work my current job and get a masters part time? are there any types of social/human service type jobs i could do with haveing an unrelated degree? i would like to eventually get a masters someday anyways, but i would love to start gaining any experience possible. any advice?
What kinds of occupational complaints do service workers have?Would unionization may be able to help resolve s Is there any reason why a "new collar" worker would not want the same benefits and clout that "blue collar" workers were able to get by unionizing? What might be some of the reasons why a "new collar" worker would be hesitant to join a union? What do you feel are the future prospects of unions in the service industry? Why? Unions now represent only 13.2 percent of the labor force (called "blue collar" workers). If the figure goes much lower, unions may become irrelevant as a force in business. The answer, many union organizers believe, is to now organize service workers (clerical workers, insurance agents, nurses, teachers, mental health aides, computer technicians, loan officers, auditors, and salespeople). It is expected that most of the future job growth in the United States will be in service businesses. The question is whether or not unions will be able to win over service workers (also called "new collar" workers). There are some 20 million such workers, more than the AFL-CIO’s current 13 million members. To reach these workers, labor unions have to broaden their traditional bread and butter (money) appeals to include quality-of-work concerns such as career development, professional autonomy, and dealing with technological change. Thus unions may push issues such as pay equity, career ladders, child care, job training, and stress management. Workers will also have to be won over by successful union marketing. Most service workers are not very familiar with unions, and there is some resistance to union organizing. Nonetheless, unions have made some progress. A recent survey found a growing discontent among non-union workers over pay and job-advancement opportunities. More than 75 percent feel that unions generally improve pay and working conditions. The survey indicated that 53 percent of non-union service workers would react favorably to having union representation. Some unions that have had success recruiting service workers include the Service Employees Union, the Hotel Employees and Restaurant Employees Union, and the National Union of Hospital and Health Care Employees. One union that is doing a particularly good job of listening to employee needs and adjusting to them is AFSCME, the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees. The union’s campaign emphasized issues such as workplace dignity and safety, pay equity, and career development. One worker who joined has a complaint that many new computer workers have. She keys information from tax forms into computers, and her work is monitored to see if she meets daily goals. If not, she receives warnings. This management style is greatly resented by some workers.

can someone please read my paper and tell me how it is!? I believe that I deserve this scholarship because I put forth so much effort into every task that I am given. I give only my best, and see every task through to the end. This has been something that I have been working on since I was a child. I was never very motivated, I don’t think that I had enough confidence to know that I deserve good things in life, therefore I dropped out of school, thinking I had enough education, and that I was better then it. When in reality I need it more than ever. I then worked a very long string of dead-end jobs from subway to Dunkin Donuts. I believe though that these jobs were really a blessing in disguise, by struggling to barely get by and working jobs I hated really proved to me that and education was my only choice and if I didn’t do something for myself now , then I was going to go nowhere and that is not where I want to be. It gave me the chance to go back to school, complete my high school education and prove to myself that I am proud of my accomplishments and I am able to do more with myself. If I am awarded this scholarship I plan to go to a community college in the fall. I will be studying human resources. Human resources has a very wide variety of jobs available in a lot of fields that I have always found myself interested in. they range from the hiring process to record keeping to career development. And it doesn’t end there, the field that I find myself more interested in is that social service aspect. The one thing about myself that I have always known from when I was a child is that I have a very good ability to place myself in someone else’s shoes, know what they’re feeling and I can’t think of a better career to enter then something where I can use that skill to it best. By receiving this scholarship it would grant me the opportunity to enter collage as soon as possible and do the one thing that I want to do so bad, help the families and children who are not as fortunate as I am to have people to love and encourage them. School has never been easy for me, I was not able to sit the classroom and pay attention as the other kids were. I never did my work to the best of my ability because I didn’t think that I was smart enough to. I considered myself and outcast and that was all I would ever be. I had to learn for myself how important education is. When I look back now I can’t help but think if only I was able to do better, if only I was able to pay attention, but it wasn’t me. I had to do it the hard way and teach myself what it means to work for your goals. Now this is becoming so much clearer and I just can’t wait to learn more.

How and when did you decide to move on...? ...when your career "hit the wall?" I am currently a permanent teleworker at my job at a NPO, working from home five days a week. Just some extra details to elaborate: I am 46 years-old, and although that I've been told that age should not be a factor in your decision to continue your education, it will still affect my ability to get a job in a market where younger people are preferred, even with a business degree. That seems like a poor excuse for not going for it, but I also have a $14K student loan I'm still trying to repay from a previous stint at a business school, and the average debt these days after earning a four-year degree can run as high as $50K. What I'm looking for here is some reasonable alternatives to accumulating all that debt.

Civilian Service? Would it be possible for me to get a job in the United States Army Civilian Service if I have Crohn's disease? Evidently there is a slim to no chance of being considered by the army, which is disapointing, but I would think that this is possible. I would be considering a career as a mechanical engineer there, working with the development of new small arms, individual and crew served weapons and ammunition, and armored vehicles. Though I guess this is the best I can hope for, I can't help but feel a tad ashamed. I know Crohn's isn't my fault (to my knowledge, at least) but it seems that my friends who intend to join the army are getting an oppurtunity that outweighs anything I could do with this condition. All I need to know, I guess, is if it is possible to join the Civilian Service with this condition. Thank you. My condition has not affected me in any way, ever since my diagnosis. I've never needed medication, a blood transfusion, or anything similar. I'm in good physical condition. (And they won't let me join the army, I know.....)

Why do all of these high level officials question the events of 9/11? Current U.S. Senator states "The two questions that the congress will not ask . . . is why did 9/11 happen on George Bush's watch when he had clear warnings that it was going to happen? Why did they allow it to happen?" Current Republican Congressman states that "we see the [9/11] investigations that have been done so far as more or less cover-up and no real explanation of what went on" Current Democratic Congressman hints that we aren't being told the truth about 9/11 Former U.S. Republican Congressman and senior member of the House Armed Services Committee, and who served six years as the Chairman of the Military Research and Development Subcommittee, has shown that the U.S. tracked hijackers before 9/11, is open to hearing information about explosives in the Twin Towers, and is open to the possibility that 9/11 was an inside job Former Democratic Senator states that he supports a new 9/11 investigation and that we don't know the truth about 9/11 Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense under President Ronald Reagan said that the official story of 9/11 is "the dog that doesn't hunt" (if you suspect he is a closet liberal, take a look at his bio) Former director of the U.S. "Star Wars" space defense program in both Republican and Democratic administrations, who was a senior air force colonel who flew 101 combat missions, and who is a Catholic Archbishop stated that 9/11 was an inside job (he also said "If our government had merely done nothing, and allowed normal procedures to happen on that morning of 9/11, the twin towers would still be standing, and thousands of dead Americans would still be alive. [T]hat is treason") Former U.S. Army Air Defense Officer and NORAD Tac Director, decorated with the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star and the Soldiers Medal stated that "there is no way that an aircraft . . . would not be intercepted when they deviate from their flight plan, turn off their transponders, or stop communication with Air Traffic Control ... Attempts to obscure facts by calling them a 'conspiracy Theory' does not change the truth. It seems, 'Something is rotten in the State.'" Former 20-year Marine Corps infantry and intelligence officer, the second-ranking civilian in U.S. Marine Corps Intelligence, and former CIA clandestine services case officer stated that "9/11 was at a minimum allowed to happen as a pretext for war", and it was probably an inside job (see Customer Review dated October 7, 2006). Former high-ranking Reagan official and very influential conservative doubts the official story about 9/11 Former Two-Star general questions the attack on the Pentagon Former Air Force Colonel and key Pentagon official finds various aspects of 9/11 suspicious Former President of the U.S. Air Force Accident Investigation Board, who also served as Pentagon Weapons Requirement Officer and as a member of the Pentagon's Quadrennial Defense Review, and who was awarded Distinguish Flying Crosses for Heroism, four Air Medals, four Meritorious Service Medals, and nine Aerial Achievement Medals, is a member of a group which doubts the government's version of 9/11 Current U.S. Congresswoman, former senior CIA analyst, former Deputy Secretary for Intelligence and Warning under Nixon, Ford, and Carter, former US Ambassador and Chief of Mission to Iraq, former Deputy Director to the White House Task Force on Terrorism, and former US Department of State Foreign Service Officer (as well as a who's who of liberals and independents) jointly call for a new investigation into 9/11 Pentagon Papers whistleblower Daniel Ellsberg said that some of the claims concerning government involvement in 9/11 are credible, that "very serious questions have been raised about what they [U.S. government officials] knew beforehand and how much involvement there might have been", that engineering 9/11 would not be humanly or psychologically beyond the scope of the current administration, and that there's enough evidence to justify a new, "hard-hitting" investigation into 9/11 with subpoenas and testimony taken under oath Former FBI translator, who the Department of Justice's Inspector General and several senators have called extremely credible (free subscription required), said "If they were to do real investigations we would see several significant high level criminal prosecutions in this country. And that is something that they are not going to let out. And, believe me; they will do everything to cover this up". She also is leaning towards the conclusion that 9/11 was an inside job A 28-year career CIA official says 9/11 was an inside job A retired 27-year CIA analyst who prepared and presented Presidential Daily Briefs and served as a high-level analyst for several presidents stated that there are indications that Cheney ordered a stand down of the military on 9/11 Former FBI agent says "The FBI, rather than trying to prevent a terrorist attack, was merely gathering intelligence so they would know who to arrest when a terrorist attack occurred." Former air traffic controller, who knows the flight corridor which the two planes which hit the Twin Towers flew "like the back of my hand" and who handled two actual hijackings says that 9/11 could not have occurred as the government says, and that planes can be tracked on radar even when their transponders are turned off (also, listen to this interview) Former 6-year Inspector General, U.S. Department of Transportation and former Professor of Aviation, Dept. of Aerospace Engineering and Aviation says "the [9/11] commission is clearly not talking to everybody or not telling us everything .... Huge discrepancies persist in basic facts .... when we heard the carriers and governments alike saying, “Oh, no one could have foreseen this. No one knew that this was coming. No one knew that there was any risk like this in the world,” is absolutely false.... The Group Director on matters of national security in the U.S. Government Accountability Office said that President Bush did not respond to unprecedented warnings of the 9/11 disaster and conducted a massive cover-up instead of accepting responsibility Former ambassador to Iraq is not satisfied with the official story Numerous high-level legal scholars question the official version of 9/11. As do numerous military leaders. And many officials from allied governments have also questioned 9/11: Statement by former President of Italy Statements by former German Defense Minister and current member of British Parliament Statement by former Canadian Minister of Defense Statements of two former MI5 (British intelligence) agents (19 minutes into video) Statement of a high-ranking general and the former chief of NATO regarding bombs in the Twin Towers (in Danish) Statement by the commander-in-chief of the Russian Air Force; and see also statement of former chief of staff of the Russian armed forces

What do you thing about this article? Anna Politkovskaya and the Self-Defense of Democracy By Jon Hellevig The writer is a Finnish lawyer who has lived in Moscow for 15 years. He has written the book Expressions and Interpretations (www.hellevig.ru) discussing Russia's social development from the viewpoint of philosophy and judicial philosophy. He is also the author of several books on the Russian tax and labor law. The murder of Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaya has once again induced a surge of anti-Russianism in Finland. Politicians, so-called researchers and media declare that Russian leaders masterminded the murder. Many people cautiously avoid these direct expressions, while being highly critical of the Russian government. Foreign Minister Erkki Tuomioja falls somewhere between the two groups, whereas Markku Kivinen from the University of Helsinki affiliated Aleksanteri Institute and MP Heidi Hautala clearly belong to the latter. It is obviously not in the interests of the Russian President to have a well known journalist killed (pointing this out would not be necessary, but for the continuous smear campaign against Russia). Based on information I received from Jukka Mallinen (translator of Politkovskaya's "Putin's Russia" into Finnish), there were no Russian government officials behind the murder. On the other hand, there is reason to put forward an alternative motive, which is quite possible -- that the murder was orchestrated by those wishing to create the kind of public opinion climate to compliment an anti-Russian agenda. In our culture, we usually honor the memory of the deceased by saying positive things about the departed in times of sorrow. One would like to show the same respect for Politkovskaya as well. But I cannot keep quiet when I see how her memory has been turned into a weapon to hit the Russian people in a manner that hinders Russia's development. Some are not happy with the opportunities that have been created during Putin's presidency. This includes the chance for many to now actively participate in a democratically run market economy. Upon the Soviet breakup, criminal elements took advantage of the weakness of a young nascent democracy by grabbing and stealing enormous possessions. Putin, courageously challenged the Mafia and oligarchs (often separated through a fine line drawn on water). Thirsty for "revenge", some of the non-Russian former Soviet states egg on the EU to engage Russia in a confrontational manner They overlook that Russia and the Russian people were the biggest victims of communism. Led by Yeltsin, the Russian people freed themselves from that burden and encouraged this spirit to other former prisoner-countries. Due to Russia's large land mass encompassing troubled regions, Russia unwillingly gets drawn into dirty games. This predicament gets twisted into the claim of a revanchist Russia bullying small, defenseless others. Given the uncritical fanfare accorded to Politkovskaya's work as a journalist, there is reason to critically review it. A case in point is her book "Putin's Russia", (published in 2004) which has been translated into several languages. In this book, she emotionally focuses on peoples' life situations (a style used in Karl Marx's Das Kapital, where he childishly tries to prove his theories of capital through the stories of people's everyday lives). Politkovskaya begins and ends her book with a stated disgust of Putin (as per the English translation of the book, see the Introduction as well as pages 281 and 282). She states her dislike of Putin "because he was a product of the Russian security service" (as if George Bush Sr.'s politics should be condemned on the grounds that he headed the CIA; a prevalent talking point in some circles). According to Politkovskaya, the KGB influenced Putin "does nothing but destroy civil liberties as he has all through his career". No mention is made of Putin's support for the late democratic mayor of St. Petersburg, Anatoly Sobchak. At the end, Politkovskaya states she is disgusted with Putin because there is a war in Chechnya (as if he started it). She adds that in her view, he is a cold, cynical, racist, who is prone to lying (among other references in her book, see pages 281-82). Politkovskaya does not like the fact that this evil (in her view) man goes to Easter church services (pages 279 and 280). Politkovskaya attacks Putin for being a "racist" and then like a racist claims that Silvio Berlusconi as a European has better powers of thinking than Russia's Putin (page 279). Politkovskaya's likening of Putin with Stalin (page 272) shows that neither the journalist nor her prize givers and back patters have any sense of proportion. But one should remember that the purpose of this investigative journalist was to tell us about her feelings on why she abhors another person. Politkovskaya displayed no perception that all phenomena in society are based on social practices and that only a positive historical process can promote the wellbeing of society. She does not understand that the basis of a working society was totally destroyed in the Soviet Union and that it was not until 1990 that the building of a democracy, market economy and society at large was started from the ruins of the bankrupt Soviet estate. Through glimpses of peoples' life experiences, she brings up some of Russia's problems, such as the undeveloped democracy, criminality, corruption, the poor condition of the army, low pensions and the state of the judicial system. In her state of disgust, Politkovskaya did not analyze what has been done about these matters during Putin's presidency. Nor does she consider the impact of decisions taken under him. Instead, she writes of human tragedies like the suicide of an alcoholic and about a former friend of hers; a busy businesswoman who went into politics to grab more riches, etc. She tries to convince the reader that Putin is to be blamed for a tragic suicide and a woman politician's ruthlessness (who succeeded remarkably well). Politkovskaya's idea was that from day one of his presidency, Putin alone had to make sure that all in Russia was right. Much like if President Tarja Halonen was responsible for the unemployment in Kainuu and drunks at Hakaniemi Market Square. In one of her brief accounts, Politkovskaya mentions an 80 year old man, who had been found frozen to a floor in Irkutsk, Siberia (page 194). The journalist says the emergency services refused to come to the rescue claiming "the man was so old he could obviously not be all right". According to Politkovskaya - Putin should have stopped this. She seemingly suggests that it was brave of her to have said as much. Politkovskaya writes of an impoverished former navy captain Aleksey Dikinin (page 198). His fate is attributed to Putin (with Politkovskaya having the guts to say so). She does not even think of referencing Soviet Communism as the main culprit Mind you, her chronicling of Dikinin was in the first year of Putin's presidency (2000). Since then, there has been an enormous increase in pensions. I have personally experienced this in the Russian hinterland. At the beginning of this year, I visited a friend of mine in the native village of Azikeevo, situated in the Ural Mountains region of Bashkortostan. A road connection to Azikeevo was opened about ten years ago, at approximately the same time that gas and heating systems were installed. A couple of years ago, phone connections were completed to every cottage. Without any prompting, my friend's 70 year old uncle repeatedly lauded how good living conditions had become. In a healthy spirit, this senior citizen regularly takes care of horses, cows and chickens. Some retired teachers in that village (a married couple) said that pensions were now so good that they could support their children's families (there is a photo report of this trip at www.hellevig.ru). Politkovskaya was far from expert on government, military and legal matters. Topics which Putin has frequently discussed in an openly candid way. Politkovskaya's writing on terrorist dramas sugarcoated the actions of terrorists. Through their deeds, terrorists try to hurt the society they hit. By killing innocent people, they create public discussion designed to fault the leaders of the target country (reference how terrorists sparked a change in government in Spain). This is incomprehensible logic for a sound person to comment on. In "Putin's Russia", Politkovskaya blames Putin for government corruption in Ekaterinburg. There is no acknowledgement on her part that this political environment was evident BEFORE Putin became president. Putin proposed to correct this by having the political center play a more active role with the outlying regions. Instead of lauding this action (a popular one with most Russians), Politkovksaya wrongly concluded it to be anti-democratic. A stance overlooking how the political center was more democratic than the most "independent" of Russian regions. The regional governors operated under the cloak of democracy. They were chosen through "democratic" elections, as in the Soviet Union (in another connection, Politkovskaya remembered how people were elected in the Soviet Union, page 271). A colorful bunch of criminals and adventurers appointed themselves as governors under the shelter of formal electing and voting procedures. This view is acknowledged by the European Commissioner for Human Rights (see: Alvaro Gil-Robles, Report on Visits to the Russian Federation, 2004). In these conditions, anyone wanting to be governor had himself elected by using threats, bribes, blackmail and bodily harm. Putin's proposal to strip the regional governors of their mandates made a positive impression. Democracy is now practiced in much more civilized circumstances, based on a democratic competition between the regional parliament and the president. To have the courage to rise against a powerful elite and to succeed is an unbelievably big achievement. In the West, this reality is not fully appreciated, let alone understood. Instead, Politkovskaya's blinded disgust with Putin is uncritically accepted as the gospel. Politkovskaya characterizes Putin as seeking "revenge" against the oligarchs. Her characterization of the Mikhail Khordorkovsky owned and operated YUKOS is flawed (pages 275, 276, 284 and 285). She erroneously claims that this business entity "operated in daylight" and "gave five percent of its profits to charity". YUKOS flagrantly violated tax laws and other legislation through (among other things) criminal tax paradise companies (I reference a Sitra Report: Suuri Maa Pitka Kvartaali, Big Country Long Quartile, 2005). Furthermore, Politkovskaya claims that Khodorkovsky got into trouble with Putin because he supported "the liberal opposition". She omits the fact that Khodorkovsky supported the Communist Party. The romantic side of her activity would be lost if this point was made. She did not state the ulterior motive behind Khodorkovsky's political activism. The "democratic" parties sold him top positions in electoral candidate lists to enable him to place his own trusted candidates. This was how he planned to carry through a takeover of the Russian Duma. But is this the kind of democracy desired by Politkovskaya, Tuomioja and Hautala? In Finland, this advocacy would be considered treason. A number of anti-Putin analysts admit that former YUKOS CEO Mikhail Khodorkovsky had committed crimes, while rhetorically asking "but why Khodorkovsky, just Khodorkovsky"? The answer is clear: others were quicker to realize that their criminal activities in Russia were over. A society cannot be built on revenge. Putin offered an invitation for all to move forward. Russia loses if there is a large scale injustice. This does not mean that democracy has no right to self-defense. This is Putin's Russia, and mine.
