Is it important to know what I want to do before going into college? How would I be able to find out what I might want to do with my life while I am in college?

What viable career options are available for a truck driver with 3 years experience, and a business degree? I also have more than 23 years as an accountant/corporate finance manager. I have experience in budgeting, business modeling/planning, variance analysis, process improvement, project management, team building and many other corporate and business related functions. I have a goal to start my own logistics related company, but I need more industry specific experience. I've tried driving the big trucks to get connected to some shippers and to familiarize myself with the shipping culture. I have also certified as a transportation broker, but don't have any experience in this area yet. I'm trying to decide what kind of work/job would provide the most education and training that would be the most beneficial toward my goal. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, Eddy

How Do I make my dad understand I want a career not just a job? How Do I make my dad understand I want a career not just a job? I am 24 years old. I have been doing seasonal work in Mallorca since I was 18. I was planning to go to Main Land Spain this Summer as I did not want to return to Mallorca. However my plans fell through. I have usually returned to a job in the winter after my stint in Mallorca. However this winter. I could not get my job back due to management changes and issues beyond my control so I signed on. As i was planning to go to Spain I worked a Part Time job in a cafe for 10 hours a week or so until the boss started to mess about and the hours and cr@p she dished out were not worth while. When my plans of going to Spain did not work out I thought i would go spend the Summer in Skegness (I live in Bradford) with a friend. She was part way through moving house and things were going slow so I knocked that on the head. Now I want a career not just a job. I want to get into Youth Work but it is a slow process how do I get my dad to understand. I don't feel I am wrong at wanting a good future. while i was in Mallorca i achived all i could and i am happy with my choices. yes it would have been nice to settle in mallorca have a nice little job and family and that but i have always wanted more. The way my mum talk it is like my dad will throw me out as i can not be a sucessful as him or my mum or brother. Luck has a part is sucess and in time i will fall lucky i know Rome was not built in a day. I am sick of the tears of frustration I cry almost every day and the pain i feel when things are not sucessful but i have to keep going. I have GCSE's ranging from A-F City and Guilds Numeracy I know how to use a pc and the internet, I did BETC Leisure and Tourism Animation Option that is hotel entertainment and I have gone as far as i wanted to in Entertainment, I also did BTEC Overseas Operations which trained you to be a childrens rep I did as much as i could cope in that job. Now when I left school I have no idea what I wanted to do career wise but i did not want to waste my life on dead end jobs so I did what i wanted to while i was young and gained work and life experience. Now I know what i want to do and it is youth work or something in residential Units ( Children's homes) I want a career that is challenging and rewarding and i am willing to study again and volunteer but its hard to find the information as a lot comes from 3rd parties and criminal record checks take a while and the job centre are slow. My dad thinks i am lazy and sit on my backside. It is tearing my mum to pieces as dad is on her back My mum is stuck in the middle as she knows what i want to do but my dad is not willing to understand and it is not easy living at home. At time I help with the cleaning but in everybody else eyes this is my destiny when i get married to be a mother and a wife and do the house work and have a job and i kind of resent doing that now but i do. i always believed parents were meant to support you in you descisions and my mum does but she is again Piggy in the middle between me and my dad. I feel like that baddy for wanting to provide a better future ffor myself while i still can but my dad thinks i should get a job any job. He does not see todays world Im in a catch 22 with recruitment agencies if i have experience they want qualifications and visa versa. I decided to go to mallorca to work and learn the language which i have done. I am now home and I have always when able to paid my own way as much as I can i have learnt to budget and be good with my money to avoid problems in my future

What career path can I choose that will help people and make good money? Hi, I am a highschool student thinking about what career path I should take. I want a job that will help people and make pretty good money. The obvious choice would be a doctor. But, I have never liked science that much, and wouldn't want to go through the dreadful process of becoming one. They have to train for about 12 years after highschool. What other jobs are there that I can plan on doing that will help people and make pretty good money. Thanks!
Life is so challenging !!! Why couples decide to bring another new life through pleasure sexual intercourse? Life is full of challenges..be it career challenge or relationship challenge or general happiness. I wonder how do couples start the family planning process. What i think for a guy it is just a random process- he is doing sex and getting pleasure and after few days he get the news that he will become dad !! For girl well she is happy that she will be mother. Are all pregnancies unwanted/unplanned? A random process of sexual intercourse getting pleasure?
What exactly is the process for emancipation in the state of Georgia? I'm 17. I'm going to be 18 in 6 months. I know I should just wait and until then but I'm in a very unhealthy environment. My mom has been physically and mentally abusing me my whole life. She doesn't do it a lot, only when I make her angry and do something wrong, but nonetheless I know what she does isn't right. It is emotionally draining for me, I'm depressed and rarely happy, I feel threatened in my own home and scared. She tries to control everything and just won't let me live a normal, healthy life. I need to get out of this situation. I have to do this for myself, for my happiness and my health. I've always known that I have to, and now that I'm almost an adult I have to take action. I need help though! I don't have a job, but I do go to school and I plan on going to college and actually having a successful career. But I need to get out of here first. I know I can become emancipated but I need to know how in Georgia. Please give me all the help and details you can... Thanks.
A secure career with horses? Due to recent developments in college, I've been considering changing major and school to get an Equine Science degree. Here's the backstory: I am a 2nd year pre-pharmacy student, supposed to be applying to pharmacy school this month. However, I recently have started to view this career merely as a job I can stand that will make me a boatload of money so that I can have horses instead of a career I love. Moreover, my grades have slipped badly (reasons are my own, and consist mainly of lack of motivation for organic chem), and though I have very high admissions test scores, the Pharm. dean told me pretty clearly in a recent advising session that if I didn't get particular grades on my finals, I wouldn't be getting in this year. I'm pretty sure I didn't bring my grades up enough, and my parents can't afford to send me out of state any longer to try again next year. I would pay my own way next year to try again, except that we fear with the economy the way it is, I will be unable to get a loan to pay my tuition. So I was considering transferring to William Woods and majoring in Equine Science. I am fairly certain (although awaiting a reply from their offices to confirm) that I could complete the degree in 4 semesters. I also stand to get quite a bit of scholarship if my GPA doesn't slip below a 3.5 after this semester. I asked about William Woods previously, but my only answer was really that I should stay in Pharm school. But this isn't really an option at this point. If I changed schools, however, I really would like to be a riding instructor, and give hunter/jumper lessons, and own a barn/school horses of my own, and perhaps do a couple of boarders a month. My question is, would I even have a shot at making this a stable career? My boyfriend is quite willing to support me, and already owns the land and is in the process of planning a barn that would support this career choice for me. He has a very stable job and makes a good deal of money, but I do NOT want to just suck off him and use his money to make it work. If I have to get a side-job, then so be it, but would that even be plausible? The other thing I am worried about is my amount of experience. I have been riding for 11 years, but not under the best of trainers, and my show experience is VERY limited. I hoped by actually doing the Equine Science degree at William Woods it would give me a chance not only to get some better training (and re-training) but also a chance to show through their various organizations. But would that be enough? I really wish my level of experience matched my passion for horses. Or, what would other stable career choices be? I understand in this economy buying then training and re-selling horses won't be profitable. I have thought perhaps about being a County Saddlery rep (there isn't one for my state) or working with local show and breed organizations, or even opening a tack store. I am also not particuarly interested in the breeding aspect of the horse industry. What other paths might I take with an Equine Science degree? It's a complex situation, but any advice would really be appreciated.
I want to become an events/party planner. Does anyone know how I would begin my own business in this field? I am in the process of planning my own wedding and I am having a fantastic time doing so. I have always enjoyed planning things: group vacations for my friends and I, road trips, etc... I could be described as a slight control freak and I am a perfectionist. I know I would exceed, and enjoy my career, if I were to make this a possibility. How do I do it? How do I get my name out there? How much do event planners charge for their services? I have a lot of questions, and hope that people who are self employed would be able to give me some pointers on getting my business up and running. Thank You in advance for your time and help.
What happens when a truck driver gets a ticket? Does he/she lose their job? My fiance got a ticket for driving over the speed limit. He just found out that he is guilty and now he has a point on his license. What happens now? Will he be able to drive again? Is his career as a professional driver over? what should I do? We are in the process of planning a wedding. Does this situation sound hopeless to you or not?

What actual degrees are recommended for a career in screenwriting or writing for television, in general? This is something that has been bothering me for a while. I'm currently in the midst of a major change in university and I'm unsure of really what programs I really want to be in to best hone what I think I'm best at. My previous major before the reconsideration was Film/Video with an emphasis on Animation, focusing more on the actual animatic process. This was chosen because my goal previously was, and remains to work my way to a position where I can viably pitch and write an animated series. Before I say anything else, I'd like to mention that you don't have to tell me how hard it would. Everyone else in the world has already. Over the past year my priorities have shifted more into writing over art, with my current plan involving attempting to break into the industry via writing for other shows before trying to pitch. I've considered switching to an English major with a creative writing emphasis. I just don't know what the people that hire actually look for in a writer. I should have specified a few things a bit further, althoug I don't know whether it will make a difference; the writing for television means more of the writing fiction and scripts and such for fiction programs in contrast to newswork or nonfiction writing; while I have done that sort of writing previously, I'd like to think that I'm better at creative fiction writing, without sounding too condescending...
Should i sue or should i just trust the system? I have a small part time job working for the NY board of Education. i started working in late may and I have YET to recieve a Check. it totals to about 90 hours and im really really pissed. I keep talking to a lady, who can't not double talk and im basically being given the run around. Somebody, somewhere along the process screwed up and every person i talk to basically blames the other or somebody else. Im thinking about sueing, but i plan to develope a career around the department of education. so is wise to sue them, considering that i am planning to become a teacher? come on what the hell is that? most of you are telling me to climb the ladder. i did! its not working and i am going to become a teacher. i need the money. i am not going to forfeit 90 hours. thats ridiculous. my question is, if i sue them can they prevent me from getting a job.

career planning help...? 1) Joanie wants to be a plumber. Which post-secondary training or education would fit her best? an apprenticeship a bachelors degree a post-graduate degree or doctoral degree military training 2) It is important to focus on only one career when determining what education or training you will need after high school. True False 3) When completing career matching, if many of your characteristics are very different from those of people in the job then: this would be a good career match for you. this career is unlikely to be a good fit for you. you may need to do more research, or consult your feelings. you will need to start over with your entire process. thanks I got all of them correct except the 3rd one i appreciate the help bless
Anthropology career? Hi there. I am really interested in an anthropology career. I'm just wondering if anyone can clarify the different subtypes of anthropology. I am mainly interested in studying race: how races diverged and developed into different races AND how environmental factors, migratory factors and other factors influenced this. What is this called? Is this even a type of anthropology? Any help would be appreciated; I'm checking out colleges and it would help in the process! Oh, just for kicks, I'm also planning to major in theater. Just thought you'd want to know, lol.
Already have a degree and want to sit for MA CPA exam. Can I take random courses to finish 150 credit hours? Hello, I'm in the process of studying for the CPA exam and plan on taking it in Massachusetts. I know the requirements are 150 credit hours. I already have an undergraduate degree in Accounting and 132 credit hours under my belt. My problem is that I don't want to enroll in any MBA programs because I plan on doing that in the distant future full time once I am POSITIVE with my career choice. I need to make up the remaining 18 credit hours, but I want to know if it's possible to just take random courses at a community college to make up for it? It would be cheap and convenient for me. Would I have to apply even if I were only taking a night class here and there? Also, how would I go about proving the 150 credit hours? Would the CC that I take courses from give me a transcript showing just those 18 credit hours? Would that backup and my undergrad degree showing 132 credit hours be sufficient? Any recommendations on schools where I can take a few courses in the Boston area?
How does one go about getting a job in a foreign country? I'm going to take a year off after I get my undergraduate degree and I really want to move to Italy and learn Italian. What process should I follow in order to get a job there? Is teaching English my best bet? I really just want something to pay the rent, food and shoe bills, not a career or anything, as I'm planning on going to medical school when I return to the states. Also, I need a visa, correct? Or is it something else that I'd need?
Entering Senior Year of College and still unsure of what I want to do? Changed my major to Geography and GIS because I want a masters in Urban Planning, but Law has always been in the back of my mind, but I haven't positioned myself for the law school process, I also am interested in Public Health- I feel way too young to finalize my career track at 20- argh and applications for grad/professional degrees are due in the next few months- ANY advice?
Working as an illegal in Spain...would a deportation show up during a background check? A friend's daughter and her boyfriend..both early 20's..are planning to go to Spain and then find work. From researching the process and talking to them, it is pretty clear they will be working illegally as they will not have the appropriate work visas or resident permits. I have read that currently Spain is cracking down more on illegal workers, fining them and deporting them. The two kids feel this is not a huge issue..worth the risk for a year in Spain. However, both are going into careers that will involve in depth criminal records checks when being hired. My question is, would a deportation (if done formally..not just go home or else sort of thing) show up on their records? Thanks...

I took a design course working in a group to determine facewidths and fatigue lives of engine parts.I also worked on a Human Powered Vehicle team and have been involved in several engineering organizations including organizing E-week. I like organizing processes the & human output efficiency interests me.I like Controls (with the bode plots and such). These appear to be industrial engineering qualities. I m planning 2 make a career transition frm loan processing to Wealth Management. How good are the prospects ? I have been working as a loan processor for 3 years now before which I was in Accounting and Auditing field. Now I realize I have made a mistake by switching to loan management as I dont see any growth in this field. Here are my concers. 1. I am doing a certification course in Private Banking which costs a lot.Is this necessary to enter WM industry ? I chose this option because all the WM job advts ask for experienced guys in WM? 2. I live in Singapore and I am Indian. This is my major concern. As most of the people here are chinese, I am worried if I would be able to make it big since I dont speak their language and if I would be able to win over their trust ? Could someone really professional and experienced answer my questions ? Thanks

I am 1978 born After graduating in commerce (B.Com in 1998) I decided to go for doing C.A. simultaneously I was doing post graduation in commerce (M.Com in 2000). I could not pass even a single group of C.A. and 2 years were wasted in this process. After this I preapared for M.B.A. entrance and got selected in one of B/C grade management college of Mumbai in year 2001 july and completed my MBA (Marketing) in year april 2003. After this I came to my native place and started a distribution business of LPG. Now I am getting bored of this business as it is a repetitive work, no new challenges, growth is stagnant so I am planning to apply for a job. Is my decision right and should I show business experience in my CV would it be a advantage and what could be the best answer for applying for a job. Please advise soon as I am in a dilemma.

Where do people get the idea that photo chemicals are hazardous materials? I often see responses on here indicating that there is something highly dangerous or corrosive about photo chemicals which means that they shouldn't be handled in the house. Besides being a hobbyist photographer who has his own darkroom, I'm also currently working toward a bachelor of science degree in Chemistry, and planning to pursue a career as a chemist. As such, I'm done a fair amount of research on the chemical processes that are going on, as well as just what exactly is in the chemicals. There are a few highly toxic developing agents, such as Pyro formulas, which few use anyway. Normal developers, such as D76, are actually quite safe to handle. In fact, hydroquinone, one of the developing agents in D76, is used in some medicines. D76 also contains borax, available as a cleaner, and sodium sulfite, used as a preservative. The only other thing is metol, which is non toxic, although it does cause an allergic reaction in some people. Where do people get all of these ideas Traditional “hypo” fixers contained sodium thiosulfate, which is a common additive to table salt. Yes, used fixer does contain dissolved silver. All heavy metals are dangerous with ingestion, but not just with normal skin contact. Silver can also cause problems with septic tanks and sewage systems, although with most home darkroom users (a few rolls a week, at most), Kodak says that it’s okay to dump fixer down the drain. I personally play it safe and remove the silver. Many people just toss some steel wool into a bucket with their spent fixer and let a silver sludge precipitate out, making a solution which is 100% safe to pour down the drain in any quantity. I personally use hydrochloric acid to precipitate out silver chloride, which I then filter out. The remaining solution can be poured down the drain, and the solid silver chloride can be landfilled. Stop bath contains a very dilute solution of acetic acid, which is commonly known as vinegar. The acetic acid concentration in a typical stop bath is even lower than that of distilled white vinegar, though. Fair points from both of you all. There are very few chemicals which are good for your eyes. It's for that reason that I make it a point to wear eye protection when handling most any chemicals, whether working in the lab, cleaning the bathroom, or working in the darkroom. For the darkroom and cleaning the bathroom, prescription glasses are generally sufficient protection, and the protection I employ, as they prevent anything potentially dangerous from splashing into your eyes. I suggest the same precaution to everyone, as your eyes are particularly delicate. When working in the lab, I always wear at a minimum polycarbonate safety glasses with side shields, or, depending on the circumstances, full protection visor-type goggles or even a full face shield. I suppose that the point I failed to explicitly make in all my rambling was the notion I often see regurgitated here that photo chemicals require some sort of special HAZMAT disposal. Anyway, thanks for the responses so far. Fhotoace, One of my favorite developers is the Sprint developer, which is sold concentrated and diluted 1:9 before use. For each 35mm roll, I use about .8 ounces of developer concentrate. For a few rolls a week, that amount is so incredibly insignificant compared to the rest of the water that goes down the drain at my house in the course of a week that it's not even worth considering. If I were to take 500+ gallons of fresh tap water(typical weekly home water usage in the US) and mix in 3 ounces of developer concentrate, the water would still be perfectly safe to drink, since the concentration would be so low it wouldn't be an issue. Stop bath is nothing more than diluted vinegar. Again, completely safe and harmless to the environment. After silver recovery in the manner I have describe(treating with hydrochloric acid), fixer is nothing more than saltwater. Again, completely hazardous to the environment.

Which job should I choose while I make a career change? I'm in the process of changing careers from city planner to holistic health care and I plan on starting with massage therapy. I'm making this change because my personality type just does not work well in a business office environment. After taking a few personality/career assessment tests I've determined that I should be in a career where I can work one-on-one with people who need physical and/or physical care. I still need to make money while I transition. However, I'm staying with my mom while I go back to school so I don't have to pay many bills. My job options are 1) Do some short-term/high-paying work for FEMA where I could save money before going back to school full-time and then get a part-time job, while I'm in school, doing something related to my interests. Or 2) work for the Fed government full-time while going to school full-time at night. Which, sounds terrible to me but then again I'd have steady pay and good benefits (but when would I sleep or study?).

Can anyone explain this detail by detail? Gong and Dragga demonstrate the importance of recognizing your own writing style and the reasons for sometimes adapting a different style to suit your purpose, the audience, and the situation. In an essay of about 400 words, explain how you would adapt for a general audience a piece of technical or specialized writing (from an academic subject, professional field, or special interest publication). At your employer (company) is there a system of due process (progressive discipline) for problem employees? I have spent most of my career at small companies. At these companies if a person does not fit in or makes mistakes, no matter how small, the result is usually termination of employment. Many people are not getting much warning, they are just cut loose. I understand that at larger companies it is really hard to fire someone unless they really did something wrong. They have a formal process before someone is fired. Oral Warning, Written Warning, Performance Improvement Plan, Final Written Warning, and then if they are still a problem, they can be fired if the senior manager of HR approves. What is it like in your company? What is a better system? I suspect managers like a quick fast termination. But employees notice these things and if a fellow worker who is highly regarded by staff is fired without due process, then they start to get nervous that this will happen to them and they will start sending out resumes. But on the other hand people do not like working around dead wood who can not be fired without so much effort that most managers just ignore the problem employee and try to work around them.

my maid of honor is ruining my wedding process? My cousin is my maid of honor. I absolutely love her and just knew she would be perfect for the job. I mean she even plans wedding as her career! she is in charge of my reception and rehearsal bc we are having it where she works. She has blown me off so many times since I have been engaged. She is even blowing off my fiance's parents. We have five more months to go and my mom and dad have sat down with her boss to address our concerns and the boss seems to think there is a jealousy factor in this. This truly hurts my feelings to know that she would sabotage my happiness over something so petty. Everytime I ask her to meet with me (such as this past sat) she says no. we live two hours away so our time is precious when we come into town. Turns out she was at a horse chase! what should I do? I do want to say that I showed up on a monday and waited for her to finish with a client for an hour. When she was done we went to lunch and she kept avoiding talking about the wedding by talking about other things that have been going on in her life. I do expect her to have a life! Its just when she puts me on the backburner, she is not only pushing us further away but she is not honoring her job duties for her job in which my parents helped her get. Its a country club not some random wedding planning job. Let me clear up again, she is the director for the receptions/ parties/etc at the place we are having it. She is getting paid very well and really I have done everything i can to give her chances to meet with me.

How does one become an American citizen? What are the prerequisites for American citizenship? I'm a high school student in Canada who plans on attending university in America, and on pursuing a career there. My father may move to the States for work. Would that affect the process? What would the process and waiting time be, in the first place? And what are the disadvantages of living in America without a citizenship? Thanks in advance. :)
How can I use the liking of amendments that pertain to criminal court as a career without being a lawyer? Im a Criminal Justice major and I took an American Court Systems class and really liked the amendments that pertained to criminal law in the court process. The only thing is I really dont want to be a lawyer, so what other highly respected, fairly to well paying careers are out there that I would be able to consider. I just love the whole criminal aspect of the criminal justice field. i.e. going after the criminal, investigating the criminal etc..... but what i am really looking for is other ideas and choices than being a police officer or investigator/detective. To add: I am 23 and this will be my first degree.... I graduate in December '08 with a B.S. in Criminal Justice and a minor in Political Science. I plan on getting my masters in Public Administration
What career path or field of study fits an interest in cognitive studies? I'm a senior in High school, and like many other seniors, I'm having trouble finding out exactly what my future plans will be. I know exactly what I am interested in, but I cannot find any career path or major that really embodies what I'm interested in. Long story short, I want to know how the brain works. I want to understand how people think and why they think that certain way. I want to explore the behavior patterns and thought processes people go through: How societies and cultures and philosophies form and evolve and ultimately interact with each other. It all boils back down to how people think and how the brain works. It is hard for me to explain exactly what I am interested in, but that is the best way I can manage. It kind of incorporates Human Geography/Sociology, Biology, Chemistry, Philosophy, Psychology, and Neurology, but none of these fields totally encompass everything I desire. So what college classes and majors would I take? Also, what careers would be available to me? I do not have an interest in therapy, so general psychology or psychiatry does not appeal to me. Neither does being a doctor, such as a neurosurgeon or someone who diagnoses diseases for patients based on review of their brain scans and behavior. More of what interests me is how thought processes and behavior patterns form and impact society and lead to the formation and interaction of people. The theories behind thought processes and cognitive abilities is really fascinating to me. I do not know what career this would fit into, but it might lead to a research field, one which I could retire from later in life and become a professor to teach others about such theories. For now I think neurobiology or cognitive psychology fits the description as close as any field can, but they do not seem to be enough. What is enough, then?

Do you think a woman should change her name after marriage? I am currently in the process of planning my wedding and then, bam!, the question arose, "Should I keep my name?" My last name is very unique and many people in my community refer to me by that name. Eventually, I want to go into politics and I am not sure if it would be a plus to keep it or not. I have always been a progressive thinker and ever since I was little I have vowed to keep my surname. But there are external factors, other than my personal needs, that come into play when deciphering whether or not I should change my name. First, I was raised in the South by traditional parents and so was my Fiancé. Secondly, there is a long-standing tradition in this country that negates my wants. In addition, my fiancé’s feelings are on the line. Questions: What would you do? How will he feel? How do I approach the topic? How will this affect my political career? Please include a brief background and where you are from.

From Engineer to Financial Analyst? I have six years of experience as an engineer. (BS in engineering) As I wanted to change my career from engineer to financial guy, I obtained an MBA degree, finance as concentration. My first job after MBA was not in the financial industry, but a little close. I have worked as an administrator at a research institution. My responsibilities include R&D budget planning, R&D accounting, profit estimation, project controller, R&D strategy establishing, process improvement (Six Sigma), Business plan development, project evaluation, etc. Because of my personal reasons, I am going to move to the US from Japan and look for a job. I wonder what kind of job positions can be aligned with my background. Because I have experience in accounting, a MBA degree in finance, am quite good at numbers and excel spreadsheet, and have analytical skills, I am targeting the financial analyst position. Any advice?
What are your Recommendations on Engineering Career Path? I just finished my 3rd year @ the University of Florida. I need 6 classes to finish my Mechanical Degree and 1 more 4 my Biomechanics Minor. I have not had an internship, research or co-op experience yet &have interviewed &sought after these for two years with negative responses. My friends say persistence is key. Should I apply for PhD Programs and fellowships in ergonomics?Find any job that will take me &/or get my teaching certification & wait till I have more money for gradschool? Should I apply the armed force’s NUPOC lucrative program ?Am I missing something here in my evaluation.I am .184 gpt away from a 3.0 and plan to take the FE next spring and the GRE this fall.
What kind of income do I need to earn to afford this lifestyle? I'm currently in college and have recently been engaged in the process of planning my future lifestyle, as well as the level of income necessary to enable such a lifestyle. These are the items I would like to own: - Three cars: a Porsche Carrera, a Lamborghini (older, used model, of course) and a luxurious "daily driver," such as a Cadillac XLR - A $500,000-$600,000 home - Designer clothing (Versace, Armani, etc.) - Regular dining schedules at 4-star restaurants I realize that these are financially grueling luxuries that can only be afforded with the income earned by a job paying at least six-figures. However, my question is, what is an optimal income which will comfortably maintain the above aspects of my desired lifestyle? Currently, I plan to apply to medical or dental school, but I am interested in considering other opportunities, as these paths will take many years to complete. Are there any financial, etc. careers that don't require connections, etc.? So I'd need to make 7 figures just to afford a $500,000 house and the three cars I mentioned? When I wrote that I wanted a Lamborghini, I meant an older, used model -- such as a 1993 model for $80,000. I would also purchase a used Cadillac XLR, and, of course, I would purchase a used Carrera. I see so many people living in $500,000 (or more expensive) homes and driving two or three Mercedes, BMWs, etc. What are they doing that is so special? They don't strike me as "rich people," but they're doing something right. Hermoder -- Thanks a lot; that's the kind of answer I'm looking for. $300k is exactly the kind of money I could be looking to make as a doctor, especially if I become an anesthesiologist or radiologist. Dr. K -- You say to become a currency broker (or some other highly sought-after financial career), but do you realize that very few people actually break into the $250k+ level of income? Whereas, if I go to medical school and match into a competitive residency (such as anes. or rad.), I will be essentially guaranteed to make $250k/year or more. I think I'll go with the "guaranteed" path.
Can you enter Thailand many times without having to renew your visa? I’m holding a Singaporean passport, but currently working in the EU. I’m taking a career break and plan to stay in Thailand as a tourist for a while. I heard that every foreign tourist, entering Thailand, will have their passport stamped with a 30-day entrance visa. After that, if they want to stay, the foreigners often make runs to Cambodia or Malaysia to renew their visas. Do you know if this process also applies to Singapore citizens and others in the Asean? Can we enter Thailand many times, each less than 30 days, without having to renew our visas at a Thai consulate or an agent? My sincere thanks,
What are your thoughts on a financial advisor? 2) What's your opinion of the role that financial services companies play in helping people plan for their future. 3) Do you have a financial security program (investment, retirement, insurance, disability & health)? If so, why did you set up your program? 4) Do you have a financial advisor? If so, what role does he/she play in your financial security planning? 5) I would like to extend this survey to several people unknown to me. Would you help by referring me to a few people to whom I might ask these same questions? I am starting a new career and part of my hiring process is getting these questions answered by as many people as possible. Any help you could give me would be greatly appreciated.

A Phd or a Masters? Health Psychology Emphasis? I'm going to get a Health psychology degree, but don't know whether or not to get the Masters, or the Phd. I know the Phd is heavy in research, and I don't like research, nor do I have plans to make a career out of it. I would actually like to counsel people in health related issues (hence the health psych emphasis). I know I can never be legalled called a 'psychologist' in California unless I have a Phd (and a license). But I want to work in hospitals and different health related areas to work with people. Any suggestions? REALLY HELPFUL if you've gone through this process yourself!! I'm applying to grad schools soon!
Which degree is best if I choose to become a Teacher? I am currently a Business Consultant for a restaurant chain. I am doing a Fresh Start at a local community college in Jan. and then transferring to a University (UTK) to finish my degree. I have always been a natural at math so I plan to go back for Statistics. For some reason, I keep going back to wanting to be a teacher and have had this feeling for many years. I was hoping that some of you could cold give me some advice. Is Statistics a good choice to become a teacher? Would just a math degree be better? I know there are many many job options with both degrees but I really want the best degree that will allow me to teach if I keep feel as if I am being draw to the career. Any help on the process that I can expect or lean to would be greatly appreciated. I also dont need the "Dont be a teacher" thing. I know how much money they make but I also know it is a personal choice and it may be the career I choose plus I feel teachers help mold our future. Thank you for all the help.
Some questions about the navy and navy rates? 1. If I were to join the navy and plan on making a career, would there be any point in which I could change to a different rate? Like after 4 years and I am up for reenlistment, would I have to reenlist as the same rate? Can I switch rates in the middle of an enlistment term, either way, how does the process work? Do you have to go to A school again? Do you lose rank? 2. If I were to join as say a navy corpsman, and during my time as a corpsman I were to go to college and learn another language like Chinese on my own, would the navy be able to reassign me to a language rating and send me overseas, or would I have to volunteer the use of my newly acquired language?
plz comment on the following.? N R Narayana Murthy, chief mentor and chairman of the board, Infosys Technologies, delivered a pre-commencement lecture at the New York University (Stern School of Business) on May 9. It is a scintillating speech, Murthy speaks about the lessons he learnt from his life and career. We present it for our readers: Dean Cooley, faculty, staff, distinguished guests, and, most importantly, the graduating class of 2007, it is a great privilege to speak at your commencement ceremonies. I thank Dean Cooley and Prof Marti Subrahmanyam for their kind invitation. I am exhilarated to be part of such a joyous occasion. Congratulations to you, the class of 2007, on completing an important milestone in your life journey. After some thought, I have decided to share with you some of my life lessons. I learned these lessons in the context of my early career struggles, a life lived under the influence of sometimes unplanned events which were the crucibles that tempered my character and reshaped my future. I would like first to share some of these key life events with you, in the hope that these may help you understand my struggles and how chance events and unplanned encounters with influential persons shaped my life and career. Later, I will share the deeper life lessons that I have learned. My sincere hope is that this sharing will help you see your own trials and tribulations for the hidden blessings they can be. The first event occurred when I was a graduate student in Control Theory at IIT, Kanpur, in India. At breakfast on a bright Sunday morning in 1968, I had a chance encounter with a famous computer scientist on sabbatical from a well-known US university. He was discussing exciting new developments in the field of computer science with a large group of students and how such developments would alter our future. He was articulate, passionate and quite convincing. I was hooked. I went straight from breakfast to the library, read four or five papers he had suggested, and left the library determined to study computer science. Friends, when I look back today at that pivotal meeting, I marvel at how one role model can alter for the better the future of a young student. This experience taught me that valuable advice can sometimes come from an unexpected source, and chance events can sometimes open new doors. The next event that left an indelible mark on me occurred in 1974. The location: Nis, a border town between former Yugoslavia, now Serbia, and Bulgaria. I was hitchhiking from Paris back to Mysore, India, my home town. By the time a kind driver dropped me at Nis railway station at 9 p.m. on a Saturday night, the restaurant was closed. So was the bank the next morning, and I could not eat because I had no local money. I slept on the railway platform until 8.30 pm in the night when the Sofia Express pulled in. The only passengers in my compartment were a girl and a boy. I struck a conversation in French with the young girl. She talked about the travails of living in an iron curtain country, until we were roughly interrupted by some policemen who, I later gathered, were summoned by the young man who thought we were criticising the communist government of Bulgaria. The girl was led away; my backpack and sleeping bag were confiscated. I was dragged along the platform into a small 8x8 foot room with a cold stone floor and a hole in one corner by way of toilet facilities. I was held in that bitterly cold room without food or water for over 72 hours. I had lost all hope of ever seeing the outside world again, when the door opened. I was again dragged out unceremoniously, locked up in the guard's compartment on a departing freight train and told that I would be released 20 hours later upon reaching Istanbul. The guard's final words still ring in my ears -- "You are from a friendly country called India and that is why we are letting you go!" The journey to Istanbul was lonely, and I was starving. This long, lonely, cold journey forced me to deeply rethink my convictions about Communism. Early on a dark Thursday morning, after being hungry for 108 hours, I was purged of any last vestiges of affinity for the Left. I concluded that entrepreneurship, resulting in large-scale job creation, was the only viable mechanism for eradicating poverty in societies. Deep in my heart, I always thank the Bulgarian guards for transforming me from a confused Leftist into a determined, compassionate capitalist! Inevitably, this sequence of events led to the eventual founding of Infosys in 1981. While these first two events were rather fortuitous, the next two, both concerning the Infosys journey, were more planned and profoundly influenced my career trajectory. On a chilly Saturday morning in winter 1990, five of the seven founders of Infosys met in our small office in a leafy Bangalore suburb. The decision at hand was the possible sale of Infosys for the enticing sum of $1 million. After nine years of toil in the then business-unfriendly India, we were quite happy at the prospect of seeing at least some money. I let my younger colleagues talk about their future plans. Discussions about the travails of our journey thus far and our future challenges went on for about four hours. I had not yet spoken a word. Finally, it was my turn. I spoke about our journey from a small Mumbai apartment in 1981 that had been beset with many challenges, but also of how I believed we were at the darkest hour before the dawn. I then took an audacious step. If they were all bent upon selling the company, I said, I would buy out all my colleagues, though I did not have a cent in my pocket. There was a stunned silence in the room. My colleagues wondered aloud about my foolhardiness. But I remained silent. However, after an hour of my arguments, my colleagues changed their minds to my way of thinking. I urged them that if we wanted to create a great company, we should be optimistic and confident. They have more than lived up to their promise of that day. In the seventeen years since that day, Infosys has grown to revenues in excess of $3.0 billion, a net income of more than $800 million and a market capitalisation of more than $28 billion, 28,000 times richer than the offer of $1 million on that day. In the process, Infosys has created more than 70,000 well-paying jobs, 2,000-plus dollar-millionaires and 20,000-plus rupee millionaires. A final story: On a hot summer morning in 1995, a Fortune-10 corporation had sequestered all their Indian software vendors, including Infosys, in different rooms at the Taj Residency hotel in Bangalore so that the vendors could not communicate with one another. This customer's propensity for tough negotiations was well-known. Our team was very nervous. First of all, with revenues of only around $5 million, we were minnows compared to the customer. Second, this customer contributed fully 25% of our revenues. The loss of this business would potentially devastate our recently-listed company. Third, the customer's negotiation style was very aggressive. The customer team would go from room to room, get the best terms out of each vendor and then pit one vendor against the other. This went on for several rounds. Our various arguments why a fair price -- one that allowed us to invest in good people, R&D, infrastructure, technology and training -- was actually in their interest failed to cut any ice with the customer. By 5 p.m. on the last day, we had to make a decision right on the spot whether to accept the customer's terms or to walk out. All eyes were on me as I mulled over the decision. I closed my eyes, and reflected upon our journey until then. Through many a tough call, we had always thought about the long-term interests of Infosys. I communicated clearly to the customer team that we could not accept their terms, since it could well lead us to letting them down later. But I promised a smooth, professional transition to a vendor of customer's choice. This was a turning point for Infosys. Subsequently, we created a Risk Mitigation Council which ensured that we would never again depend too much on any one client, technology, country, application area or key employee. The crisis was a blessing in disguise. Today, Infosys has a sound de-risking strategy that has stabilised its revenues and profits. I want to share with you, next, the life lessons these events have taught me. 1. I will begin with the importance of learning from experience. It is less important, I believe, where you start. It is more important how and what you learn. If the quality of the learning is high, the development gradient is steep, and, given time, you can find yourself in a previously unattainable place. I believe the Infosys story is living proof of this. Learning from experience, however, can be complicated. It can be much more difficult to learn from success than from failure. If we fail, we think carefully about the precise cause. Success can indiscriminately reinforce all our prior actions. 2. A second theme concerns the power of chance events. As I think across a wide variety of settings in my life, I am struck by the incredible role played by the interplay of chance events with intentional choices. While the turning points themselves are indeed often fortuitous, how we respond to them is anything but so. It is this very quality of how we respond systematically to chance events that is crucial. 3. Of course, the mindset one works with is also quite critical. As recent work by the psychologist, Carol Dweck, has shown, it matters greatly whether one believes in ability as inherent or that it can be developed. Put simply, the former view, a fixed mindset, creates a tendency to avoid challenges, to ignore useful negative feedback and leads such people to plateau early and not achieve their full potential. The latter view, a growth mindset, leads to a tendency to embrace challenges, to learn from criticism and such people reach ever higher levels of achievement (Krakovsky, 2007: page 48). 4. The fourth theme is a cornerstone of the Indian spiritual tradition: self-knowledge. Indeed, the highest form of knowledge, it is said, is self-knowledge. I believe this greater awareness and knowledge of oneself is what ultimately helps develop a more grounded belief in oneself, courage, determination, and, above all, humility, all qualities which enable one to wear one's success with dignity and grace. Based on my life experiences, I can assert that it is this belief in learning from experience, a growth mindset, the power of chance events, and self-reflection that have helped me grow to the present. Back in the 1960s, the odds of my being in front of you today would have been zero. Yet here I stand before you! With every successive step, the odds kept changing in my favour, and it is these life lessons that made all the difference. My young friends, I would like to end with some words of advice. Do you believe that your future is pre-ordained, and is already set? Or, do you believe that your future is yet to be written and that it will depend upon the sometimes fortuitous events? Do you believe that these events can provide turning points to which you will respond with your energy and enthusiasm? Do you believe that you will learn from these events and that you will reflect on your setbacks? Do you believe that you will examine your successes with even greater care? I hope you believe that the future will be shaped by several turning points with great learning opportunities. In fact, this is the path I have walked to much advantage. A final word: When, one day, you have made your mark on the world, remember that, in the ultimate analysis, we are all mere temporary custodians of the wealth we generate, whether it be financial, intellectual, or emotional. The best use of all your wealth is to share it with those less fortunate. I believe that we have all at some time eaten the fruit from trees that we did not plant. In the fullness of time, when it is our turn to give, it behooves us in turn to plant gardens that we may never eat the fruit of, which will largely benefit generations to come. I believe this is our sacred responsibility, one that I hope you will shoulder in time. Thank you for your patience. Go forth and embrace your future with open arms, and pursue enthusiastically your own life journey of discovery!

I am "on call" if I feel like I need a session. (and trust me its nice not to be paying out every week and feeling like you are not getting anywhere) -I have more time it seems even though I am busier than ever?! Both my wife and I are now involved in community where we really were home bodies and on the verge of divorce. Our time together as a family has blossomed. Our private life has intensified. - My wife is an artist who after 20 years had only a couple of shows, now she has so many shows going that she is behind in production and she is now selling!!!! -I am able to spend way more time with my son than I ever dreamed, I get to be a Father! -My wife's own personal and business contacts have exploded. Additionally, her own personal growth because of this has been tremendous! Talk about a self esteem makeover! -We always wanted to "do unto others"; and its now happening, I am sharing and mentoring culinary students; my wife is helping other artists with their businesses, and is a cub scout leader assistant; together we are helping an elderly neighbor keep her home from going into foreclosure. -Business associates, clients, and friends are giving us gifts just for being...us! THIS IS NOT A MAGIC BULLET!!!!!! But it is an awesome, FUN tool to help you on your way, keep you on track, inspire you to do MORE.... Becoming an FBI Agent and what studies should I choose? Hello- My career goal is to become an FBI Agent. Currently, I am a freshman enrolled at Johnson & Wales University but I am planning on transferring to another university. Up to date, my GPA is a 3.55. I am considering on doing a double-major program with Criminal Justice and Accounting. Then, when I graduate, I plan to go to graduate school to earn my Master’s degree in both majors. One of my first questions is, when I do a double-major program can I major in two subjects such as Criminal Justice and Accounting and learn another language? Or can I only do Criminal Justice and a language? My second question is about joining the army reserve. Right now I am fully focused on my academics, but I plan to enroll with the army reserve for three years and plan to do this in my junior or senior year. I have not talked to any recruiter yet, I am just simply researching on what I can do in the future to enhance my opportunities. I have been looking at the website and I like the job of a Criminal Investigations Special Agent. I wanted to know if choosing the job of a Criminal Investigations Special Agent is a good choice that will be relevant to joining the FBI or is there another job title that I can look into? Do you think joining the army will enhance my resume and chance of being hired? Or should I just earn my Master’s degree and apply for the job? I know the FBI is a lengthy process, but I am determined to achieve this goal. Please, any input or information you know will help me consider this decision. I thank all of you for your time and your help will be greatly appreciated.

Colleges for classical singers? I am currently a sophomore in high school, and I'm starting to think about college so that I can effectively plan for the rest of my high school career, but I honestly have no idea where to start. I'm extremely interested in classical (opera) singing; I have been taking lessons for a few years and have done a lot of shows with my local opera company (Opera Pacific). I am seriously considering a career in classical voice, but I'm still young: I'd like to keep other options open. I also have very high academic standards, so basically my question is this: What are some good schools that combine academics and singing? Once I decide on a school, how should I go about deciding what to major in, etc? This whole process kind of intimidates me :)
What should Freedom Lovers Do ?? How can one combine professional life with the advancement of liberty? Of course it is presumptuous to offer a definitive answer since all jobs and careers in the market economy are subject to the forces of the division of labor. Because a person focuses on one task doesn't mean that he or she isn't great at many tasks; it means only that the highest productive gains for everyone come from dividing tasks up among many people of a wide range of talents. So it is with the freedom movement. The more of us there are, the more we do well to specialize, to cooperate through exchange, to boost our impact by dividing the labor. There is no way to know in advance what is right for any person in particular. There are so many wonderful paths from which to choose (and which I will discuss below). But this much we can know. The usual answer—go into government—is wrongheaded. Too many good minds have been corrupted and lost by following this fateful course. If often happens that an ideological movement will make great strides through education and organization and cultural influence, only to take the illogical leap of believing that politics and political influence, which usually means taking jobs within the bureaucracy, is the next rung on the ladder to success. This is like trying to fight a fire with matches and gasoline. This is what happened to the Christian right in the 1980s. They got involved in politics in order to throw off the yoke of the state. Twenty years later, many of these people are working in the Department of Education or for the White House, doing the prep work to amend the Constitution or invade some foreign country. This is a disastrous waste of intellectual capital. It is particularly important that believers in liberty not take this course. Government work has been the chosen career path of socialists, social reformers, and Keynesians for at least a century. It is the natural home to them because their ambition is to control society through government. It works for them but it does not work for us. In the first half of the 20th century, libertarians knew how to oppose statism. They went into business and journalism. They wrote books. They agitated within the cultural arena. They developed fortunes to help fund newspapers, schools, foundations, and public education organizations. They expanded their commercial ventures to serve as a bulwark against central planning. They became teachers and, when possible, professors. They cultivated wonderful families and focused on the education of their children. It is a long struggle but it is the way the struggle for liberty has always taken place. But somewhere along the way, some people, enticed by the prospect of a fast track to reform, rethought this idea. Perhaps we should try the same technique that the left did. We should get our people in power and displace their people, and then we can bring about change toward liberty. In fact, isn't this the most important goal of all? So long as the left controls the state, it will expand in ways that are incompatible with freedom. We need to take back the state. So goes the logic. What is wrong with it? The state's only function is as an apparatus of coercion and compulsion. That is its distinguishing mark. It is what makes the state the state. To the same extent that the state responds well to arguments that it should be larger and more powerful, it is institutionally hostile to anyone who says that it should be less powerful and less coercive. That is not to say that some work from the "inside" cannot do some good, some of the time. But it is far more likely that the state will convert the libertarian than for the libertarian to convert the state. We've all seen this a thousand times. It rarely takes more than a few months for a libertarian intellectual headed for the Beltway to "mature" and realize that his or her old ideals were rather childish and insufficiently real world. A politician promising to defang Washington later becomes the leading expert in applying tooth enamel. Once that fateful step is taken, there are no limits. I know a bureaucrat who helped run martial law in Iraq who once swore fidelity to Rothbardian political economy. The reason has to do with ambition, which is not normally a bad impulse. The culture of Washington, however, requires that ambition work itself out by paying maximum deference to the powers that be. At first, this is easy to justify: how else can the state be converted except by being friendly to it? The state is our enemy, but for now, we must pretend to be its pal. In time, the dreams are displaced by the daily need to curry favor. Eventually the person becomes precisely the kind of person he or she once despised. (For Lord of the Rings fans, it's like being asked to carry the ring for a while; you don't want to give it up.) I've known people who have gone this route and one day took an honest look in the mirror, and didn't like what they saw. They have said to me that they were mistaken to think it could work. They didn't recognize the subtle ways in which they themselves were being drawn in. They recognize the futility of politely asking the state, day after day, to permit a bit more liberty here and there. Ultimately you must frame your arguments in terms of what is good for the state, and the reality is that liberty is not usually good for the state. Hence, the rhetoric and finally the goal begin to change. The state is open to persuasion, to be sure, but it usually acts out of fear, not friendship. If the bureaucrats and politicians fear backlash, they will not increase taxes or regulations. If they sense a high enough degree of public outrage, they will even repeal controls and programs. An example is the end of alcohol prohibition or the repeal of the 55 mph speed limit. These were pulled back because politicians and bureaucrats sensed too high a cost from continued enforcement. The problem of strategy was something that fascinated Murray Rothbard, who wrote several important articles on the need for never compromising the long-run goal for short-term gain through the political process. That doesn't mean we should not welcome a 1 percent tax cut or repeal a section of some law. But we should never allow ourselves to be sucked into the trade-off racket: e.g., repeal this bad tax to impose this better tax. That would be using a means (a tax) that contradicts the goal (elimination of taxation). The Rothbardian approach to a pro-freedom strategy comes down to the following four affirmations: 1) the victory of liberty is the highest political end; 2) the proper groundwork for this goal is a moral passion for justice; 3) the end should be pursued by the speediest and most efficacious possible means; and 4) the means taken must never contradict the goal—"whether by advocating gradualism, by employing or advocating any aggression against liberty, by advocating planned programs, by failing to seize any opportunities to reduce State power, or by ever increasing it in any area." Libertarians are not the first people who have confronted the question of strategy for social advance and cultural and political change. After the Civil War, a large part of the population of the South, namely former slaves, found themselves in a perilous situation. They had a crying need to advance socially within society, but lacked education, skill, and capital. They also bore the burden of pushing social change that permitted them to be regarded as full citizens who made the most of their new freedom. In many ways, they found themselves in a position somewhat like new immigrants but with an additional burden of throwing off an old social status for a new one. The Reconstruction period of Union-run martial law invited many blacks to participate in politics as a primary goal. This proved to be a terrible temptation for many, as the former Virginia slave Booker T. Washington said. "During the whole of the Reconstruction period our people throughout the South looked to the Federal Government for everything, very much as a child looks to its mother." He rejected this political model because "the general political agitation drew the attention of our people away from the more fundamental matters of perfecting themselves in the industries at their doors and in securing property." Washington wrote that "the temptations to enter political life were so alluring that I came very near yielding to them at one time" but he resisted this in favor of "the laying of the foundation of the race through a generous education of the hand, head and heart." Later when he visited DC, he knew that he had been right. "A large proportion of these people had been drawn to Washington because they felt that they could lead a life of ease there," he wrote. "Others had secured minor government positions, and still another large class was there in the hope of securing Federal positions." As it was in the 1870s it is today. The state chews up and either eats or spits out those with a passion for liberty. The extent to which W.E.B DuBois's Marxian push for political agitation has prevailed over Washington's push for commercial advance has been tragic for black Americans and for the whole of American society. Many obtained political power, but not liberty classically understood. We can learn from this. The thousands of young people who are discovering the ideas of liberty for the first time ought to stay away from the Beltway and all its allures. Instead, they should pursue their love and passion through arts, commerce, education, and even the ministry. These are fields that offer genuine promise with a high return. When a libertarian tells me that he is doing some good as a procurement officer at HUD, I don't doubt his word. But how much more would he do by quitting his job and writing an expose on the entire bureaucratic racket? One well-placed blast against such an agency can bring about more reform, and do more good, than decades of attempted subversion from within. Are there politicians who do some good? Certainly, and the name Ron Paul is the first that comes to mind. But the good he does is not as a legislator as such but as an educator with a prominent platform from which to speak. Every no vote is a lesson to the multitudes. We need more Ron Pauls. But Ron is the first to say that, more importantly, we need more professors, business owners, fathers and mothers, religious leaders, and entrepreneurs. The party of liberty loves commerce and culture, not the state. Commerce and culture is our home and our launching ground for social reform and revolution
